Paula Vennells served as the CEO of the British Post Office from 2012 to 2019. She is also ordained as a minister in the Church of England and has held various positions within the Anglican Church, including serving as a lay member of the General Synod, which is the legislative body of the Church of England. Vennells has been involved in various aspects of church leadership alongside her corporate career.
However, it’s worth noting that her tenure at the Post Office was marked by controversy surrounding the handling of a faulty accounting system that resulted in hundreds of sub-postmasters being wrongly accused of theft and false accounting.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has acknowledged that the Church of England did not adequately question the involvement of Paula Vennells, former Post Office boss and Anglican priest, in Church bodies amid the Horizon scandal.
In response to a written question to the General Synod, Welby admitted that more inquiries should have been made about Vennells’ positions on an ethical investment committee in 2019 and 2020, given the revelations about the Horizon scandal.
He refrained from confirming or denying whether Vennells was interviewed for the position of bishop of London, citing confidentiality.

What is right and wrong, for it is well understood nowadays,
that to do wrong because you are obeying is not to escape responsibility.
‘Only obeying orders’ was the main defense presented by many of the defendants
in the Nuremberg war trials when the senior members of the Nazi government,
the Armed Forces, and secret police were put on trial for war crimes.
‘Only obeying orders’ is the excuse that people bring
when they have done something that they do not, in their heart of hearts,
feel was intrinsically right, but where they felt disempowered.
The story of Daniel 6 is very clear as to its subject.

Guest speaker Most Reverend Justin Welby continues our series in the book of Daniel, looking at who holds the ultimate authority over our world.

I didn’t mean to bruise your heart
I’m so sorry it drove us this far apart
Drowning in a sea full of tears
I thought, we could’ve lasted for years
And I still do, wanna live my life with you
So throw me, throw me a lifeline, baby
Say, that I’m really sorry
Pick up the phone
And show me, show me you really want me
Hold me, love me, need me
I don’t wanna make this climb
People change, and I can try
Expectations I will defy
Girl, I’m begging on my knees
C’mon, c’mon, baby, please
So throw me, throw me a lifeline, baby
Say, that I’m really sorry
Pick up the phone
And show me, show me you really want me
Hold me, love me, need me
I don’t wanna make this climb on my own

Dus gooi me, gooi me een reddingslijn, schatje
Zeg dat het me echt spijt
Neem de telefoon op
En laat me zien, laat me zien dat je me echt wilt
Hou van me, heb me nodig

She’s Always a Woman
by Billy Joel:
8 Lady Diana – Candle in the wind (Goodbye Englands rose) – Elton John – Lyrics in text
15 feb. 2014
Lyrics..
Goodbye England’s rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will
Loveliness we’ve lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we’ll always carry
For our nation’s golden child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned our long before
Your legend ever will
Goodbye England’s rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
Goodbye England’s rose
From a country lost without your soul
Who’ll miss the wings of your compassion
More than you’ll ever know
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And you footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will

Oh, no…
Here we go
Oh, oh…
Please help me God, I feel so alone
I’m just a kid, how can I take it on my own?
I’ve cried too many tears, yeah, writing this song
Trying to fit in, where do I belong?
I wake up every day, don’t want to leave my home
My momma’s askin’ me why I’m always alone
Too scared to say, too scared to holler
I’m walking to school with sweat around my collar
I’m just a kid, I don’t want no stress
My nerves are bad, my life’s a mess
The names you call me, they hurt real bad
I want to tell my Mom
She’s havin’ trouble with my Dad
I feel so trapped, there’s nowhere to turn
Come to school
Don’t wanna fight, I wanna learn
So please Mr. Bully
Tell me what I’ve done
You know I have no Dad
I’m livin’ with my Mom
Just be hopeful, yes, I am hopeful for today
Take this music and use it
Let it take you away
And be hopeful, hopeful
And He’ll make a way
I know it ain’t easy, but that’s okay
Just be hopeful
Why do you trip every single day?
I didn’t ask to be born but now I have to pay
I ain’t got no money, you take all I have
When I give it to you, I search through my bags
I feel so scared when you shout me down
You kick me, punch me, throw me to the ground
When I ask you, “Yo, what have I done?”
You hit me again, and make fun of my Mom!
‘Cause I’m hopeful, yes, I am hopeful for today
Take this music and use it
(Check it out!)
Let it take you away
And be hopeful, hopeful
And He’ll make a way
I know it ain’t easy, but that’s okay
Just be hopeful
What I wear is all I have
We lost our home, I’m livin’ from a bag
Yo, Mr. Bully, help me please
I’m flesh and blood, accept me please
Hey, Mr. Bully, I don’t know what to do
My mind, it can’t explain what I did to you
Mr. Bully, take in all my pleas
Every single day you bring me to my knees
Hopeful, yes I am hopeful for today
Take this music and use it
Let it take you away
And be hopeful, hopeful
And He’ll make a way

Just be hopeful.

Alsjeblieft God help me, ik voel me zo alleen
Mijn moeder vraagt me waarom ik altijd alleen ben
Wees gewoon hoopvol
Waarom doe je elke dag zo tegen me?
Je schopt me, slaat me, duwt me tegen de grond
Elke dag laat je me weer smeken
Wees gewoon hoopvol

The First Nation Residential Schools in Canada
For a period of more than 150 years, First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation children were taken from their families and communities to attend schools which were often located far from their homes. More than 150,000 children attended Indian Residential Schools. Many never returned.
There were numerous reports of physical punishment, sexual abuse, malnutrition, and inadequate healthcare in these schools. The harsh living conditions, abuse, and neglect in residential schools resulted in significant trauma and impacted the mental, emotional, and physical health of the survivors.

Canada’s Dark Secret | Featured Documentary
In 1996, the last residential school in Canada was closed down, bringing to light horrifying stories about the methods used to sever indigenous children from the influence of their families and to assimilate them into the dominant “Canadian” culture. Over more than a century, tens of thousands of families were torn apart as children were kidnapped or forcibly removed from their homes
Residential schools were part of an extensive education system set up by the Canadian government and administered by churches with the objective of indoctrinating Aboriginal children into the Euro-Canadian and Christian way of life.
Bud Whiteye, a survivor of the Mohawk Institute Residential School, was “picked up” and taken to the school along with four other children as they walked along a public road to visit his grandmother.
I’m ashamed to say I’m Canadian because of what my government has done.
Ron Short, former RCMP officer
“They didn’t put us in a room and indoctrinate us all day long or anything like that,” he explains. “It was in the routine of the place.
“You didn’t speak anything but English. You went to the white man’s school. You went to the white man’s church. You wore white mens’ clothes. All those were built in. It wasn’t a classroom-type lecture. It was ingrained in the system.”
In 2008, the Canadian government launched the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which finally enabled survivors to give their testimonies on life in the residential schools. Abuse – mental, physical and sexual – was rife and, although research and statistics vary, it is estimated that 6,000 children died in these schools. Some evidence puts the casualties at three times that number.
After its formation, the TRC travelled around Canada for six years, gathering testimony from thousands who bore witness to the tragedies of the residential schools. Numerous “Aboriginal healing” programmes were put in place to help those affected to move on with their lives.

Directed and Produced by Steven O’Riordan, The Forgotten Maggies follows the lives of several Magdalene women who left the institutions in Ireland and tried to obtain Redress for the abuse they suffered. It focuses on the human rights aspect surrounding the Magdalene Laundries, including an exploration of the High Park exhumation in Dublin, where 155 Magdalene women were exhumed in 1993.
The documentary was launched at the Galway Film Festival in 2009 and had its international premiere at The Cantor Film Centre in New York the same year. It was broadcast on Irish TV for the first time in 2011 and is the only Irish-made film on the subject matter.
The Irish Times said that “The Forgotten Maggies was an opportunity to “rectify” in some small way, the wrong that was visited upon these women over many years”, with the Irish Independent saying, “It took the persistence of documentary maker Steven O’Riordan and his team to secure justice.” The Forgotten Maggies gave the women political recognition, clearing the way for an official state apology to the survivors of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries in 2013.
It was filmed in Ireland and the UK from 2006-2009, including Carlow, Wexford, Dublin, Kildare, Cork, Limerick, London and Bournemouth.

Getting pregnant out of wedlock was long seen as a disgrace in Catholic Ireland. By 1998, more than 50,000 women had had their babies taken away and given up for adoption. Many of these children are now trying to trace their birth mothers.
They are also fighting for their plight to be recognized at last. Contraception and abortion were long banned, sex before marriage taboo, and sex education was practically non-existent. If a woman, nevertheless, fell pregnant, she was generally treated as the “guilty” party even if she had been raped. Whoever was unable or unwilling to have an illegal abortion abroad had no further say over the matter. The priest was informed and he decided whether the woman would be thrown out on the street, or sent to one of the 18 Catholic mother and baby homes.
Paul Redmond was born in one of those homes. He describes himself and others in a similar situation as “survivors” of a scandal that is still rocking Ireland. The 59-year-old keeps on returning to the place where he was born, which now lies empty. He says that many babies were left lying in their beds there and their nappies were rarely changed. Children with a disability or another skin color were particularly neglected, according to Redmond.
The consequences of this neglect were terrible. In the town of Tuam in western Ireland, local historian Catherine Corless discovered that the bodies of almost 800 babies and children had been concealed in a mass grave on the site of the former home. She prompted a national investigation into the scandal and went on to campaign for the exhumation of the infants’ remains.
That is also something close to Anna Corrigan’s heart. She discovered that she had two brothers who were born in the home in Tuam. A death certificate exists for her brother John, but it’s unclear what happened to William. Exhumation and DNA tests could bring clarity. Anna is still searching for clues. She hasn’t given up hope that her brother William might still be alive.

Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley is the most senior member of the Church to call on the Most Rev Justin Welby to stand down, following the “horrific, horrendous and shocking” report.
Welby is facing mounting pressure to resign after it emerged last week that he did not follow up rigorously enough on reports of John Smyth QC’s “abhorrent” abuse of more than 100 boys and young men.
Welby acknowledged he should have more rigorously followed up the details and said last week he had considered resigning, but decided to stay in his role.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby is facing mounting pressure to resign after a damning report into a child abuser associated with the Church of England.
The spiritual head of the world Anglican communion is accused of failing to act on reports of horrific child abuse by John Smyth QC, who preyed on more than 100 boys and young men.
A review of the Church’s handling of the Smyth case said Justin Welby “could and should” have reported the case to authorities when details were presented to him in 2013.
Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley is the most senior member of the Church to call on Justin Welby to stand down, after others accused him of “allowing abuse to continue” between 2013 and Smyth’s death in 2018.
Mr Welby has acknowledged that the review made clear he had “personally failed” to “energetically investigate”. He said he had considered resigning, but decided to stay in his role.
Smyth is the most prolific known serial abuser associated with the Church of England, having subjected as many as 130 victims to traumatic physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual attacks.
His abuse took place over almost five decades and across three countries, according to the report. He targeted boys who attended summer camps he ran for young Christians. Smyth abused 26 to 30 boys and young men in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s, the report found. He then relocated to Africa, where he abused a further 85 to 100 “young male children aged 13 to 17”.
The report says that from July 2013, the Church of England knew “at the highest level” about Smyth’s abuse in the UK and should have “properly and effectively” reported him to the UK police and the authorities in South Africa.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is under mounting pressure to quit over his handling of an abuse scandal, with a bishop saying “his position is untenable”.
A petition by some members of the General Synod – the church’s parliament – has gathered more than 9,000 signatures urging Justin Welby to stand down over his “failures” to alert authorities about “abhorrent” abuse of children and young men.
Earlier, the Bishop of Newcastle, Helen-Ann Hartley, the highest-ranking Church official, urged the Most Rev Justin Welby to step down, following a “horrific, horrendous, and shocking” report into a barrister thought to have been the most prolific serial abuser to be associated with the institution.
Last week, revelations came to light that he did not adequately follow up on reports of “sadistic” John Smyth QC’s “abhorrent” abuse involving more than 100 boys and young men.
The Makin review into the abuse concluded that he might have been brought to justice had the Archbishop of Canterbury formally reported it to police a decade ago.
Smyth was thought to have been the most prolific serial abuser to be associated with the church.
A victim of Smyth described the failure to act as a “dereliction of duty” and a betrayal of victims.
James O’Brien reflects on his time at Catholic school, where a ‘number of monks engaged in the sexual abuse of his peers’.

32 Smyth scandal: Church of England victims fight for compensation

Victims of John Smyth’s brutal physical and sexual abuse have welcomed a letter from the Church of England’s safeguarding team in which the institution “accepts the harm caused” and offers a meeting with Justin Welby.
The Archbishop of Canterbury resigned earlier this week over his failure to do enough to stop Smyth’s abuse to as many as 130 boys and young men.
But now, we can disclose that a legal loophole may mean the victims – some of whom have had their lives and livelihoods ruined – won’t receive financial compensation for what happened, because Smyth was not directly employed by the church.

In the corridors of power within the Church of England, a seismic shift has taken place. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, a towering figure in global Christianity, has resigned, marking one of the most turbulent moments in modern ecclesiastical history. His decision comes on the heels of the damning Makin Review, which laid bare a dark chapter involving John Smyth, a barrister accused of subjecting over 130 boys and young men to decades of unimaginable abuse.
What makes this resignation even more poignant is the voice of Tim Welby, the Archbishop’s son, who openly supported his father’s decision to step down. “Dad was right to resign—it was the correct decision,” he declared, revealing a deeply personal side to a public reckoning. In his candid remarks, Tim offered a glimpse into the Archbishop’s anguish, accountability, and his commitment to making amends during his remaining time in office.
This isn’t just the story of a resignation—it’s a reflection on leadership, institutional accountability, and the heavy toll of human failure. As the scandal reverberates, questions loom large: How could such a predator operate unchecked for decades? What lessons can institutions of faith draw from this tragedy? And, perhaps most hauntingly, what is the cost of healing for the survivors?

59 Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby resigns over child abuse scandal | BBC News

2 nov 2024 #BBCNews
The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has resigned, days after a damning report said the Church of England had known for years about a serial child abuser who subjected more than 100 boys and young men to sexual and physical assaults.
.
In a resignation statement Welby said he “must take personal and institutional responsibility for the long and retraumatising period between 2013 and 2024”.
The spiritual head of the world Anglican communion was accused of failing to act on reports of horrific child abuse by John Smyth QC.
The review of the Church’s handling of the Smyth case said Justin Welby “could and should” have reported the case to authorities when details were presented to him in 2013. Mr Welby had acknowledged that the review made clear he had “personally failed” to “energetically investigate” when presented with the facts.
Smyth is believed to be the most prolific serial abuser to be associated with the Church of England, having subjected as many as 130 victims to traumatic physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual attacks.
His abuse took place over almost five decades and across three countries, according to the report. He targeted boys who attended summer camps he ran for young Christians. Smyth abused 26 to 30 boys and young men in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s. He then relocated to Africa, where he abused a further 85 to 100 “young male children aged 13 to 17”.
The report made clear that from July 2013, the Church of England knew “at the highest level” about Smyth’s abuse in the UK and should have “properly and effectively” reported him to the UK police and the relevant authorities in South Africa.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Aleem Maqbool and Mark Easton.

A Shocking Breach of Trust
For many, the idea that the Archbishop of Canterbury – one of the highest-profile and most trusted leaders in the Anglican Church – could be involved in such a scandal is almost unthinkable. His position, not just as the spiritual leader of the Church of England but as a prominent figure within the global Anglican Communion, carries immense responsibility. The very notion that he and other Church leaders failed to act on critical information about a prolific child abuser contradicts the values of transparency, justice, and care for the vulnerable that the Church is supposed to uphold.
This story is particularly jarring because of the significant public trust and moral authority vested in figures like Welby. The betrayal of that trust, especially within an institution that claims to be a moral and spiritual guide, calls into question not just the leadership’s competence, but the very integrity of the Church itself.

The Rotherham Scandal: A Systemic Failure of Leadership
Much like the recent scandal surrounding the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Rotherham scandal reveals how high-profile figures, in this case, local authorities and law enforcement, failed to act when they had the power and responsibility to protect vulnerable people. In Rotherham, over a period of 16 years, more than 1,400 children were subjected to sexual exploitation, often by grooming gangs, while authorities repeatedly failed to intervene.
The shocking truth that such abuse was allowed to happen, in plain sight, for so long is a stark reminder of how systemic failures at the top can enable horrific abuses to persist unchecked. The authorities – police, social workers, and even local government leaders -,ignored or downplayed numerous warnings. Their inaction and the subsequent cover-up stemmed from a mixture of incompetence, misplaced priorities, and fear of political correctness.
This mirrors the kind of failure we see in institutions like the Church of England, where leaders like Justin Welby should have been the ones to protect the vulnerable and uphold justice. In both cases, the failure to act wasn’t just a matter of individual negligence; it was a deep systemic failure that protected perpetrators over victims and undermined the trust of the very communities they were meant to serve.
Both scandals expose the devastating consequences of those in power neglecting their responsibility to act, and the profound harm that results when leaders prioritize self-preservation over the welfare of the vulnerable.
