How could someone who looks so innocent be so evil? Instead of bringing babies into the world, Lucy Letby murdered them. In a 7 News Spotlight special investigation, for the first time, why did she do it? And what it took to catch her out.

Channel 7’s 7NEWS Spotlight’s unsettling investigation that peels back the layers on Lucy Letby, a neonatal nurse turned serial killer.
Renowned investigative journalist Michael Usher leads this chilling probe.

Letby was recently handed a life sentence for the murder of seven newborns and attempted murder of six others at a north-east England hospital. She’s now classified among the globe’s most notorious child serial killers. Her trial lasted for nine grueling months but left crucial questions unanswered—particularly the motives behind her killing spree and how she managed to elude capture for so long.

Michael Usher examines the complex psychology that fuelled Letby’s unimaginable acts against defenseless infants. A key focus is on the strange love triangle Letby was involved in—raising questions about whether her obsession with a married doctor was a driving force behind her heinous acts.

In an exclusive scoop, Usher speaks to the parents of one of Letby’s early intended victims, Michael and Victoria Whitfeld. They recount a harrowing experience of discovering Letby near their daughter, Felicity, who was later diagnosed with a collapsed lung. Despite the Whitfelds’ concerns, their warnings went largely unheeded.

Victoria Whitfeld’s emotional recounting of the events will leave viewers stunned. She says the experience felt like her heart was being torn out, especially given the abrupt turn in Felicity’s health condition.

The Whitfelds are now pushing for a comprehensive investigation into Letby’s past involvement with more than 4,000 other infants. This episode promises fresh evidence, unheard witness accounts, and details of Letby’s shocking clandestine confessions.

Liz, together with broadcast journalist Caroline Cheetham produced the groundbreaking podcast The Trial of Lucy Letby, which brought to life the trial as it happened. Her crimes make her the most prolific child murderer in modern British history. The 33-year-old attacked her tiny victims ‘in plain sight’ – injecting air into their bloodstreams or feeding tubes, causing them to collapse and die. She was also convicted of trying to murder six other newborns by poisoning them with insulin, overfeeding them milk, tampering with their breathing tubes or assaulting them. Manchester Crown Court was told that doctors at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire repeatedly went to managers to try to blow the whistle but their concerns were dismissed. It wasn’t until the deaths of two identical triplets in 23 hours in June 2016 that Letby was finally removed from the ward and the unexpected deaths and collapses stopped.

he name Lucy Letby has now become a name associated with pure evil. The story that has shocked and horrified England, and people all over the world is something you wouldn’t find in even the worst horror movies. A young nurse murdering tiny babies while working in the neonatal unit of a UK hospital. Instead of caring for the most vulnerable, she was injecting them with air, milk, and insulin.. And in one case, even inserting a sharp instrument into a baby’s throat to try and make it bleed to death…. But yet, a UK court has just ruled that this is exactly what Lucy Letby did between 2015 and 2015 when she was just 25 years old. She killed infant babies while on duty and then pretend to the heartbroken parents that she had done everything she could to try and save their child. In some cases she even look up the parents on facebook after, and wrote messages of sympathy to them.

We now know the where, when, and how of these horrific crimes, but we do not know the why. Dr. David Holmes is one of the UK’s leading criminal psychologist and joins Colm Flynn on this podcast to try and give an insight into the mind of someone like Lucy Letby, and why someone with psychopathic tendencies can be driven to do acts of pure evil. They also discuss the public’s fascination with the case, and serial killers in general, and whether or not people like Lucy Letby should be named in public, given the attention their narcissistic personality so badly craves, or if they should be simply ignored and left to die in prison.

29 aug 2023

In this video, Dr. G delves into the case of Lucy Letby, a UK nurse convicted of murdering infants in her care. Using expert analysis of her body language during her arrest and interrogation, along with a psychological exploration of the motives that drove her heinous acts, we attempt to answer the haunting question: Why would a nurse do such terrible things?

Lucy Letby, a former nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital in the United Kingdom, was convicted of murdering 7 infants and attempting to murder 6 others between 2015 and 2016. The case bewildered investigators and the public alike due to the lack of a clear motive. Prosecutors suggested Letby relished the power and attention she received from the resuscitation efforts and gravitated towards caring for the most critically ill infants. Comparisons were drawn to Beverley Allitt, another UK nurse convicted of similar crimes in the 1990s, who was found to have Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Despite maintaining her innocence, Letby was found to be the common denominator in all the incidents, and confessional notes hidden in her bedroom further implicated her. Following her removal from the neonatal unit in 2016, the mysterious deaths ceased, strengthening the case against her.
