Discover the story behind the trial that exposed deep societal issues in France, sparking outrage and debate about justice, power, and accountability.
The Rape Trial That Shook France to Its Core
The case of Gisèle Pelicot concluded in December 2024 is seared into the memory of anyone who followed its horrific detail playing out in a French court. This brave woman waived her anonymity to give evidence during the trial of her husband and other men who routinely drugged and raped her.
But her abusers were only caught by chance thanks to French policemen who had been called to an incident at a local supermarket where Pelicot’s husband had been spotted illegally filming women. They seized his phone and the enormity and horror of what they found next led to last year’s trial and convictions.
Some trials go beyond the courtroom and strike at the heart of an entire society. This was one of them. What began as a legal case against powerful men turned into a national reckoning on abuse of power, justice, and the treatment of victims in France.
The course of the trial, the controversial rulings, and the public outrage made this one of the most exceptional and influential cases in French history. What did this case reveal about the justice system? How did society respond? And what are the lasting consequences for future victims seeking justice?
This page provides in-depth insights and a comprehensive collection of videos to understand why this trial sent shockwaves through France – and why its impact is still felt today.
Gisèle Pelicot Opens Up About Surviving Years of Secret Abuse | The Interview
13 feb 2026 The Interview | A Podcast From the New York Times
In one of the most heinous sexual-abuse stories in history, Gisèle Pelicot was drugged and raped repeatedly by the person she trusted most in the world, her husband, who also invited dozens of men into their bedroom to rape her while she was heavily sedated.
In 2024, a trial of Pelicot’s abusers began. Even then, we might never have known her name. But in her new memoir, “A Hymn to Life: Shame Has to Change Sides,” she explains why she decided to forgo anonymity and make the trial public. That choice made her a feminist icon, inspiring women all over France to rally around her and to demand change to France’s consent laws.

Dominique Pelicot : un mari, un violeur #cdanslair 17.09.2024
18 sep 2024

We peel back every layer of this unfathomable case: the shockwaves it sent through France and the Pelicot family; the rapists’ jaw-dropping attitudes to their crimes; Gisèle’s astonishing bravery in speaking up in her 2024 trial; and even evidence linking Dominique Pelicot to two cold cases – one a brutal murder.
