For those who understand Dutch and watch the 20-minute video from a talk show, there are occasionally things said that are truly shocking and repulsive. It gives the impression that within the justice system, things occur that are almost impossible to put into words, because it seems unfathomable that such things could happen in the justice system.
Voor degenen die Nederlands begrijpen en de 20 minuten durende video van een praatprogramma bekijken, worden er af en toe dingen gezegd die werkelijk schokkend en weerzinwekkend zijn. Het wekt de indruk dat er binnen het rechtssysteem zaken plaatsvinden die bijna niet in woorden te vatten zijn, omdat het onvoorstelbaar lijkt dat zulke dingen binnen het rechtssysteem kunnen gebeuren.

Oud-coffeeshopbaas Johan van Laarhoven zat jarenlang vast in een Thaise cel, mede door toedoen van de Nederlandse overheid. Nu klaagt híj de Nederlandse staat aan. Johan van Laarhoven, bekend van coffeeshop The Grass Company, zat 103 jaar gevangen in Thailand, waarvan hij er 20 moest uitzitten. Nu spreekt hij zich voor het eerst uit over zijn ervaringen.
Oud-coffeeshopbaas Johan van Laarhoven zat jarenlang vast in een Thaise cel, mede door toedoen van de Nederlandse overheid. Nu klaagt híj de Nederlandse staat aan. In 2014 verzocht Nederland de Thaise autoriteiten om medewerking aan een onderzoek naar Van Laarhoven. Dit leidde tot zijn arrestatie en die van zijn vrouw.
In Thailand werd hij veroordeeld voor het witwassen van geld dat hij zou hebben verdiend met zijn coffeeshop. Hoewel zijn straf oorspronkelijk 103 jaar bedroeg, hoefde hij er ‘slechts’ zes uit te zitten. Zijn vrouw kreeg eveneens een gevangenisstraf.
Van Laarhovens zaak heeft veel politieke aandacht getrokken. Tweede Kamerleden van diverse partijen, zoals D66, SP en GroenLinks, stelden vragen over de rol van Nederland bij zijn arrestatie. Advocaat Gerard Spong en presentator Filemon Wesselink zetten zich in voor zijn vrijlating. Zelfs de Nationale Ombudsman kwam met een kritisch rapport. In 2019 beloofde toenmalig minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus zich in te spannen om Van Laarhoven naar Nederland te halen. Na onderhandelingen met de Thaise autoriteiten werd hij in januari 2020 overgebracht naar Nederland, waar hij de rest van zijn straf mocht uitzitten. Er werd tevens een gratieverzoek ingediend.
In 2023 werd bekend dat Van Laarhoven niet langer strafrechtelijk wordt vervolgd in Nederland. Hij klaagt nu de staat aan wegens haar rol in de gebeurtenissen die leidden tot zijn jarenlange gevangenschap in Thailand. Dit is het begin van een juridische strijd waarin Van Laarhoven hoopt gerechtigheid te vinden en aandacht te vragen voor de fouten die gemaakt zijn.
Johan van Laarhoven is een voormalig eigenaar van The Grass Company, een van de bekendste *coffeeshop*s in Nederland. Na zijn emigratie naar Thailand in 2008 raakte hij verwikkeld in juridische problemen, mede door een verzoek van de Nederlandse overheid. Zijn zaak werd een voorbeeld van de complexe relatie tussen nationale en internationale wetgeving rondom drugsbeleid.
Gerard Spong is een gerenommeerd strafrechtadvocaat die bekendstaat om zijn inzet voor mensenrechten. Hij speelde een belangrijke rol in de verdediging van Van Laarhoven.
Ferdinand Grapperhaus, voormalig minister van Justitie en Veiligheid, reisde persoonlijk naar Thailand om te onderhandelen over de terugkeer van Van Laarhoven naar Nederland.
Filemon Wesselink, presentator en programmamaker, gebruikte zijn platform om aandacht te vragen voor de zaak van Van Laarhoven.
