“Je suis un violeur comme ceux qui sont dans cette salle”. Ce sont les mots prononcés ce mardi par Dominique Pelicot, principal accusé dans l’affaire des viols de Mazan, qui n’était plus apparu à l’audience depuis mercredi dernier pour des raisons de santé. De retour ce mardi dans l’enceinte du tribunal où il est jugé pour avoir drogué et fait violer Gisèle Pelicot pendant dix ans, il a reconnu lors de son interrogatoire la totalité des faits, a demandé pardon à son ex-épouse, mais aussi chargé les 50 autres accusés qui “savaient tous, ils ne peuvent pas dire le contraire”. “Maintenant, je veux me battre pour que tout le monde comprenne qu’elle n’est rien d’autre qu’une victime dans ce dossier”, a-t-il notamment ajouté.
À la sortie de la matinée d’audience, le public, nombreux, a applaudi Gisèle Pelicot dans la salle des pas perdus du tribunal d’Avignon. Une femme devenue le symbole en France de la lutte contre les violences sexuelles. Samedi, des milliers de personnes se sont rassemblées dans plusieurs villes du pays pour apporter leur soutien à celle qui a été droguée par son mari et violée par des hommes recrutés sur Internet, et qui a pris la décision de tenir les audiences publiques car “la honte doit changer de camp”. Lundi, émue, elle avait pris la parole pour remercier toutes les personnes qui lui ont témoigné “leur soutien depuis le début de cette épreuve”. “Grâce à vous tous j’ai la force de mener ce combat jusqu’au bout”.
Un procès hors normes qui met en cause 51 hommes pour 92 faits de viol sur une même victime et interroge sur l’étendue des violences sexuelles dans la société : les hommes sur le banc des accusés viennent de tous milieux, de toute classe sociale, de tout âge, de toute profession. Sur les réseaux sociaux, la phrase “Not All Men” (pas tous les hommes) est reprise par des hommes qui semblent avoir peur des conséquences de la médiatisation de cette affaire mais aussi par des hommes et des femmes pour dénoncer des violences vécues. Une affaire qui secoue depuis une semaine la société dans son ensemble et questionne également la définition du viol par la loi, jugée souvent par certains trop restrictive car omettant la notion du consentement et à la mise en place de réponses structurelles.

It’s more than fifty years since Gisele Pelicot married the man convicted for repeatedly raping her and enlisting strangers to abuse her while she lay drugged in their home.
Dominique Pelicot’s horrific abuse spanned more than a decade – targeting not just his unsuspecting wife but other family members and strangers, too.
Dominique Pelicot was first arrested in 2010 for filming up women’s skirts in a shopping centre near their Paris home.
He was released, and the following year began drugging his wife.
But it’s not until 2020 that the footage was discovered by police after they arrested Dominique for upskirting again.
They seized his laptop and found thousands of other photos and videos of him and others raping and abusing Gisele.
The world has been gripped by the trial that followed and led to the conviction of Dominique and 50 other men.
