It would seem that most folks believe that these places only existed in Ireland. NOT SO THEY WERE WORLDWIDE! I spent two and a half years in one such place – The Convent of the Good Shepherd, Lichfield Hall, in Blackley, Manchester. It was horrendous. It was not a ‘mother and baby’ home at that time (1966-68), but an institution incarcerating young teenage girls who were in the ‘care system’ for a variety of reasons. At that time the Social/Child Welfare Services never inspected the places where children/ teens were dumped, hence so much ‘historic abuse’ now coming to light. There will never be an apology or any form recompense for those of us outside of Ireland.
There can be no justice until these women are paid in full.
How can anyone in Ireland – or anywhere else really – remain Catholic after learning of this?
my dads mom was locked in one of these vile institutions for a long time. my dad born in 1934, sold on to another family. when he tried to get his mother released was told she couldnt leave as only her mother and sister signed her in and they were the only ones who could sign her out. THE CATHOLIC CHURCH need to release records, and admit their wrong doing. absolutely sick. my dad never got to know his mom, he doesnt know who his dad is as she was placed in there and gave birth to a girl first, so how did my dad get conceived if she couldnt leave. vile priests….
It is right that the Irish Govenerment has appologised and yes they should be made to pay to each and all of the victims of this abuse, but what of the Roman Catholic church who’s nuns ran these laundries, they should be made to pay a dam sight more, and people should be held to account for this abuse. Not even a sorry from their lips have been said!
Poor Mary. God bless her
These abusers are lower than rats in their behaviour to humans.
Apology is useless without a countrywide second level education historical program NOT run by any church
Doesn’t go any way near far enough. Prosecutions should follow and all living culpable parties subjected to the same treatment
It’s so shocking that these poor poor women was treated like this the nuns priests should be convicted of Cruelty sexual abuse murder of babies shameful Ireland government should be a shamed compensate all those that have suffered..such an Hippocratical country Justice to all have suffered
It was also the State that used the Gardai to sent back escaped women
these nuns should be punished
All those nuns need their day in court. Then theyd feel a huge sense of relief.
too little too late for me they belong in the court of human rights and should be imprisoned for the rest of there life from the fucking pope down to the pedophile priests.
Where is the apology from the church?
they need tobe closed down for good
And a couple of weeks prior to the apology he told the same people, the same victims to fuck off, they were not going to get a penny out of him..
No apology from the Catholic Church though !!!
I am from Mexico… Even in a 3rd. world country, nobody would take your baby away! What is abhorrent is that there are ONLY 81 comments! The Irish State STILL HAS NOT DONE EVERYTHING IT SHOULD!
I’m sick of these scum getting away with these atrocity’s by using an apology. They should be, if still breathing, jailed for life. Stop letting religion off with just an apology !
I don’t believe any apology from the nuns
Why I hate the catholic chugrch 101.
On whose behalf did he apologise?
Took way too long
wheres all these bloody nuns now,
The human leuge
