Qatar: Killer Heat Cripples Workers – Blog

JeriMo W
Outstanding documentary! It is shameful to abuse people like that and it happens all over the world in different ways. Shameful! Thank you for your work on this subject. Great job!
Sumit Shrestha
As Nepali this was hard to watch. I really wish my country could develop policies that could develop industry within nation so our brothers and sisters don’t have to move to foreign land for work.
Rodney Drover
I worked in Qatar for several years. Sadly the documentary is correct. They have a policy of not working is high temperatures but they don’t enforce it. They really don’t care for anyone but themselves. You will never know how many men and woman have died to build the infrastructure and to prepare for the Fifa Cup. Very sad and a disgrace.
Andiau Little
Unfortunately, it’s not only in Qatar but all over the GCC. At my old university in Kuwait, some workers died during a construction because of a heat stroke. Of course, nothing happened to the owners… It would be time to treat people as people and not just commodities.
Marie Katherine
I remember a school sporting event in the Western USA that the temp. was 109 F. by 11:00. Several monitors thought we should call it off until next morning, but the headmaster ruled we should continue. After a break of 30 minutes the sport resumed. Students began dropping like flies during the relay race. Many had not yet passed the baton to the second runner before falling down or they just sat down and fell over. Monitors found them insensible, eyes dried open, breathing rapidly or not at all, mouths so dry they could not speak. The only way to help was to get shade by putting your clothes off and over them. The headmaster ordered everyone still standing to walk slowly inside the school and for monitors to keep them covered. Try to spit in their mouths and eyes if possible. Three monitors collapsed on or by their students. Forty-seven were brought to hospital. Three were revived quickly, two monitors and one student. The rest were kept for at least five days of rehydration and sent home with instructions to remain inside unless the temperature fell below 90 F, but not to exercise outdoors at all unless below 75 F. Everyone must limit to stretching exercise, not cardiovascular type for three months, and must rehydrate with plain water or electrolyte water. One time heat stroke was recoverable for the young, but two times can result in heart and kidney damage. For older people, one time can be fatal and two times results in organ failure from which few recover. Two students remained in hospital for six weeks and one monitor for many months on oxygen and a kidney machine. This monitor had already had a weak heart at age 56. He was sent home but had to return to hospital every ten days for kidney blood dialysis. He spent his last year of life bedridden, so he had nurses round the clock for O2, dialysis, IV hydration, and vitals monitoring. After a time all he did was mouth a few words. He was mostly asleep or too tired to move. RIP Sayed Rashan. Please remember humans are not camels!

I lived in the gulf for a while, the heat is unbelievable in the summer. Not only is it hot, but the humidity is high as well. It is the most miserable heat on Earth.
haque
That security guy is a hero. And those workers too. What they do for there family is speeches ❤️
Arabesque
I worked in Qatar – not as labor – but my company made us work longer hours than what was legal . They consciously violated the law that protects our health. But if you complain about it – they just say you can go if it’s not ok for you.
Bannedone 3ice
In my South East Asian country’s south and central regions, our temperatures have risen up to 50 degrees Celsius during the last decade. Not that it was cooler before, but temperatures keep rising each year. They’re not only affecting people, but our crops also suffer because of the excessive heat and water shortages. For those who say climate change is a farce, need to come here and see for themselves how the heat has become unbearable for us.
Nathaniel St
The companies need to treat their workers with respect and human deceny…sounds like the issue is greedy companies wanting everything done bottom dollar
Tamm AL Jazeera
I lived for the last 20 yrs of my life between the eastern province of Saudi Arabia and Riyadh City, which locates on the heart of Arabian Peninsula desert . Both these regions are the most extreme on term of heat on summer. I am a native Saudi and my home town is on the north which has more moderate climate on summer. We are now on June and on hot day, the weather hits 50 C afternoon . This is not normal compared to previous yrs, I am positive that on August the weather will exceed temperature of 50+ C very easily.

Am proud of Malcom, am a Kenyan too working as security in Qatar but still nothing has change
Saf
it’s really really sad this is still happening, especially after getting the world cup hosting rights and they had to say the same correct-sounding things to fifa, but eg. in another doc i saw how the official temperature is always just below whatever the law prohibits working above (it was also much higher than 32 degrees), and especially because i saw this as a kid when i lived in Oman, didn’t hear much about heatstroke but every1 knew how little they got paid
Shelly Anderson
I lived in UAE and the dreadful heat/humidity is not even something I can explain to those who haven’t experienced it. The foreign workers situation is appalling; they are considered no more than slaves. In the eyes of the govt these poor folks are not even considered to be human so they are literally expendable. The govt claims to care about these foreign workers, but their words are empty.
Mallory Jines
Guessing the incredible amount of concrete, asphalt and glass buildings are reflecting even MORE heat into the environment. That raises temperatures.
Chandra Thapa
This is a great documentary!! Bravo. I think for Nepalese worker not only in Qatar but in other countries too !! there won’t be any compensation because our so called government is corrupted and they never think for it’s people. Now these politician has become so much corrupted, if they get chance for corrupting their own organs they will do so.!!! By the way I have not miss World Cup Football but this time Qatar 2022 I will not watch on behalf of cruelty done on my Nepalese brother and sister. I love world cup.
dancemunki
The sad thing is the Nepal government is not issuing a strong enough warning to it’s own citizens. The government should highly discourage it’s citizens from going there period.
Chandan Choudhary
It’s really sad and heart breaking. When i was in qatar My friend die in qatar in 2013. His roommate said he died while sleeping. They saw blood on his nose. After they call police. Police took dead body. They where not allowed to see the dead body and when they ask the company they said go back to work. When they ask cops and hospitals they did not reply anything. After few days his body was sent back to nepal in a box and a piece of paper saying cause of death was cardiac arrest. I didn’t get chance to meet him. He was from my home town.
Said Khalid
It’s summer right now today and still companies are forcing workers to expose themselves to the extreme heat working. If you don’t at the end of the month the hours you worked shall be calculated and if they’re less you loose 50qr from your salary per every 11hrs less.Very sad and cruel
Muhammad Raza
I lived in Qatar my whole life I was born and raised there. Firstly I have to say qataris are really nice people very civilised. But still the amount of workers I’ve seen who don’t get laid salaries was too high. Plus they work them like slaves, I swear if you look at the conditions in a labour camp you will tear up. Even tho I was born and raised in Qatar it was literally my home, once my dad’s job ended they jus kicked out my entire family. I mean it’s said to leave a place you call home
Adis Singapore
Very sad stories. May their souls rest in peace..
Untainted Indigo
Crazy how hot it’s in Qatar if you’re regular worker! Qatari government needs to do more for these people. Would you accept to have your children work in such conditions? If no, then you must change.
Vanusha Godranah
I’ve worked in Qatar, they treat people like slaves with a damn low salary. In my professional career that was the worst. I was physically and mentally exhausted. They make you work more hours than it’s written on ur contract without getting paid!!
ARUN V PRASAD
Being one among the expats in gulf, who are not privileged to work in AC rooms.,i feel it much relatable to compare the scenario with SQUID GAME. we are capable to choose still we cant coz our birth is our fault.😢
Manoj Thomas
I had worked in Qatar,Oman,UAE ,KSA & Kuwait . Kuwait was the hottest. The highest recorded temperature was in Death valley National Park USA,followed by some place in Libya which was followed by some place in Kuwait.
Haelie Heard
I lived there. Was sad to see how these people and others like them were treated. I doubt they are even allowed to keep their own passports once they are there so they are basically stuck there. Government sanctioned racism is a real thing there. And there’s a reason the country is rich.
Yusuf Ahmed
Can’t understand that someone will want to visit there and spend money knowing the circumstances of the workers. It is appalling to hear they don’t have unions in this regard.
Mer Kov
The most affected sector are the construction workers. Hard job, small pay. Personally, I blame their respective governments. Qatar gives opportunity, however, success depends on the individual’s educational background and credentials. If countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, etc. didn’t care about their own citizens, what obliges Qatar to do so?
XxxH0ku5F0ku5xxX
Construction workers worldwide are so under appreciated, it’s sad. People always look at beautiful structures, but never see the blood sweat and tears it took. Same for Dubai, use and abuse.💔 Oh yeah let’s run in 120 degrees, logical 👍🤔
Bobby Sierra
I am a migrant worker my self for 24 years..and I managed to go back to my country of birth healthy and sane.
Dawa Dolma
🙏May his soul rest in peace 🙇‍♀️
Maxima Aliguyon
I saw a video that even my countrymen went crazy with the heat yet they were never also compensated. It is our governments from poor countries who should make contracts that is bearable and human to our people working in these oil rich countries. Don’t expect them to be sympathetic coz they’re not under the sun doing manual works.
AlfredMuchai64
this is very true for migrant workers especialy for labourers its so hard…..
Ali Imtiaz
Al Jazeera will never report this horrendous worker abuses happing across their office while they busy themselves documenting atrocities happening thousands of miles away.
mihiec
So stupid to organise sport events in country where weather is dangerous to well-being. Qatar is disgusting by its laws and not protecting workers there.
Mr. Positive
The world needs to understand that region for what it truly is: A violent, venture capitalistic state with no regard for the betterment of humanity.
Mick Gatz
A very good story/doc Thank you. from Australia.

These are just figures that we know of now thanks to this documentary imagine how many lives have been lost in putting up all those humongous structures. So sad
Kristian Schmidt
accountability; spread the word on social media when you have a problem; the Gulf countries fear social media more than anything else, and they seek incessantly to control social media in their countries
Chander
I am sure there must be quite a high number of Indian workers. I wonder whether the local Indian embassy is suppressing this information. We want this information to get out to discourage workers flying to Doha. That is the least thing we can do.
naaddoo
very good docu! that is very sad… never support such coutnry !!!!🙏
Damaris Ambia
That Kenyan who was in solitary confinement for a month for writing about his fellow workers being exposed is so unfair.
But Nevertheless
Im finnish, I start to struggle at +25 celsius, this would be unbearable for me, I would die no doubt, im almost having a heat stroke just by watching this.
dipankar modak
Regarding the world cup, 2002 Korea/Japan should be a motivating example of why tournaments of such scale shouldn’t be held in the Asian continent. After the scandals of 2002 Korea/Japan, Spain, Italy, and Portugal filed petitions to never host any future tournaments in this continent. But FIFA being FIFA ignored everyone and everything.
Solomon Okoli
Qatar is one of the richest nations on this planet; a 50 degrees Celsius(122 F) daily temperature shouldn’t disproportionately kill laborers. There should be investigations, especially as most of those workers are building infrastructure and a residential city for the world cup in November.
Jim Parsons
There will come a time (which is soon approaching), where all the wealth in the world will not comfort those in the gulf states. You will wish for cooler temperatures but, none shall come and no one will dare work in the hellscape that it will be.
Ruddy Lopez
Don’t even provide you with water at these construction companies, you bring a 2 gallon and its finished before the day is done. Messed up how rich these construction companies are and don’t want to help out the family that just lost the breadwinner. Working under the heat in Canada gets really hot in the summer some days but Qatar probably feels like you’re in an oven all day 24/7
Benelyn Canoy
Until now some companies and boss not following this law.. even you complain to The Qatar Labor law office they keep you waiting until you die.. so sad for all migrants workers here in Qatar 🥺😔

I wish I could Boycott the FIFA World Cup more, even though I am already refusing to tune in. It sucks because I generally like watching the World Cup 😞

I begin to see Qatar as something different from what I use to thought of them

We can help these workers by making it illegal to work in Qatar. Keep them in their home countries so they don’t get exploited.
Shadow8472
Qatari human rights commission calling in the secret police to disappear an innocent men for raising workers right issue !. Three cheers for Qatari Human right’s commission for working so diligently
Gyurme Sherpa
The day will come when the Indian subcontinent will be selling medicines and techs and not blood and sweat. The day will come when the world will give us the respect we deserve. These countries won’t allow basic women rights to their own citizens, I can understand why they won’t allow even the basic rights to these workers.
MarkehPolo
Not to mention the salary delay. Working as a contractor right now and I have 4 months delayed salary haha
Bo3abd
It’s extreme weathers condition it’s everywhere in parts of the world there’s strong cold and there’s strong rain you documentarian is just saying workers die from hot weather it’s just like saying Arabs going to American UNI’s and dying from tornados or folding countries or going to UK for UNI’s and getting robbed in the middle of the streets or dying of cold I was there no one offered me a jacket. Life is tuff everywhere you just need to work hard and there’s rich and there’s poor. it’s a pain thing to lose one of your family members just coz of weather but what’s worse is getting killed just for a piece of metal.
Maria Kaiser
I will never visit the gulf states for vacation , I boycott Qatar , Dubai , Bahrain , Saudi Arabia etc .. I wish everybody would boycott these horrible states !!

32 degrees centigrade in the gulf cannot be day time temperatures, except for the winter and spring few months. Maybe Nov to Feb or mid March. The rest of the year is like fire coming down.
evans thiongo
Can’t blame them for the coaching sun and heat, but at least improve their wages, they pay them peanuts.
Tenka Menin
These kind of jobs should be worked late afternoon to nights. The middle east is in the desert belt along with the Sahara of Africa, and the out back of Australia. The only way to combat an expanding desert is by consolidating resources into regreening these regions.
N O
Wow, it took over a thousand innocent lives in order for the UAE to change its laws, completely absurd, greedy, selfish bastards. May all the Nepalis who lost their lives RIP.
Momin Omer
Qatar doesn’t force anyone to come; before arriving, you should know the weather and everything about Qatar. This documentary is about the World cup and how they are very jealous that Qatar is hosting it. Any worker who doesn’t feel comfortable in their job, they can leave immediately; all of this is a lie. Qatar is moving forward for a brighter future, and we are delighted that we are living there as expats.
mamamia555
It’s not allowed here to mobilize workers outdoor at midday during the peak summer months June-August and stiffly enforceable with drastic action on the employer fyi
Oneness of Mankind
His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Emir of Qatar should watch this report. His Highness talked about the great achievements of Qatar at WEF, Davis recently. May he has compassion on all migrant workers in working in extreme heat in Qatar. May Allah bless him !

As Matt Damon said it in Syriana: “The locals dress in all white, as if they’re telling you they dont have to work when they shake your hand”
Rizwan Shaheed
Qatar labour laws are very strict but most of the construction and maintenance companies are run by Asians like Indians, so they find loopholes and never answerable to the government. Indians never bother about human rights or anything, Qatari government never gone deep enough to find what’s happening, there are thousands of workers without proper salaries and accommodation, and there is a system called ‘bed space’ causes more and more health problems, where 10 to 12 person lives in a bed room. Qatar officials never gone deeper to find these things is a shame

Legalise cannabis. In Canada £11,000,000,000 are generated annually and 90,000 jobs. In Caribbean slave plantations growing sugar cane it was cheaper to cut a mans arm off if he got it trapped in the thresher, than to turn the machine off.

I was coming to qatar in two weeks from now but seeing this i will have to cancel the visa,my life matters more than money.

Probably there may come a time when Qatar may become unlivable.
Big Foot
1. Qatar labour laws are very mindful of Human rights the major problem is they don’t have on ground watch dogs to snif the law breaking companies, Violation of the Qatar law has a very hefty fine and serious consequences. 2. The migrant workers do not know their fundamental rights in Qatar and when oppressed they have no where to run to of which infact they do and that is the ministry of labour. Without knowing these facts they end up being hopless to slave like treatment and any form of complains they raise they are threatened with termination and the next flight ticket back home!!. 3. We had a problem with our company after being promised good working condition and pay only to get in Qatar and the tune changed to the devils music for almost two years!!. We voised our problem to the Ministry of labour together with our embassy the situation was resolved amicably and drastic changes were made. Qatar is a beautiful peaceful county (but very hot in the summer) with people form all over the world with different cultures and religions. 4. My take is (a) Government agencies should enforce companies to educate and inform the workers on their fundamental rights. (b) Government mobile watch dogs should be put in place visiting companies ensuring the welfare of the workers and ensuring companies are abiding by the law. (c) A data system collection tracking companies performance regarding their workers wellfare.

Title should say: “Qatar: Killer Heat Cripples Slaved Workers” Cause we all know.

Atleast in Las Vegas, construction workers work at night. But with rising temperatures, las vegas and phoenix could become as hit as Doha

All is dear, but poor man’s labour 😢 😕, and from nowhere such-and-such a heartless country was granted worldcup🤔everything thing is violated that even Fifa is corrupted, how can a human fret becomes a peace gathering hence no changes being made,Lord have mercy but there is no country in the Persian gulf that can fit for worldcup

The government has done less to implement, improve and guard workers rights ,like all work are suspended 11 am during summer time but for example securities guarding institutions and private properties and public places they still work-no one cares (luckily for those with cabins) for shelter and those who don’t have some have been provided with shorts and coolers and fan to stay in the same conditions outside, pathetic.
Waithera Degisth
Blood infrastructures. Heartbreaking.
s_alk Alk
I think you should think of it in open mind like any other country who goes into contract with resourcing companies in local countries like India, Nepal… and they pay good money with living expenses, it is these companies who rip-off these workers and put a group in one room when these companies got paid enough for each worker to have their own room. Some actually choose to share to save money. It is those resourcing companies who stalls the projects to cause delays and then force workers to work overtime. Btw, the quality of work is would not even be accepted by India if these companies commit a fraction of the lack of quality that happening These projects should have completed at least 3 years back. Yes Qatar like any other country not perfect but it is heading towards perfection. So stop the BS propaganda. You want to talk about injustice talk about what India is doing to Muslims and Seeks, talk about what China is doing to muslims, talk about what france is doing to Muslims What is really shameful is Qatar leaving its religion and identity to please you guys that is shameful

If thats true, its the government of Nepal to blame, why do you allow your people to come over and work in Qatar?

The weather is really hot. But the painful part is every day in the part of some of us a security no off. You work everyday , yet the expected salary is in trouble. But if you insist , the answer is I will terminate your contract, what next you need to be calm . No say . Hmmm life in Qatar . Well we are managing it here.
Loki Asgard
Journey Tv should also visit Sonapur in Dubai’ (no one go there) and see how the migrants workers living conditions. All over gulf the labor camps are worst than concentration camp. But no one care……

It’s quite simple .. if you don’t want to work in the heat , don’t apply for the job.. if migrants workers were not wanting to go Middle East for work , it would force the governments to provide more action to protect workers .. Qatar and Middle East has come along way in the last 10 years .. and for your information Qatar government has banned outdoor work from 10am – 4pm in the summer months … it’s official .. and again if you don’t want work in the temperatures the middle East has in summer months .. please don’t apply for the job.. simple ..

Echoes of the English trying to use Irish convict labour on sugar plantations in Barbados and Jamaica. History, it seems, does repeat.

There is your issue right there. Most of these people did it to themselves. If you can’t afford to have a family don’t. Simple just stay single 🤷‍♂️.

We should mention the fact that those companies are owned by Indians and foreign business investor’s, most of the constitution companies are indian owners , management indians , so those people are being killed by their companies not the government, it’s indians managers that will push employees to work outside in construction, government has shut down some construction companies that have violated such rules ,but still it’s a nightmare to work in such countries
