Just had a dress brought to me needing extensive alterations. The customer did not like my price (a very fair price to them and not so much to me if you were to watch me work a record the hours taken) soon there will be no one to alter your ill fitting garments in the UK because people expect a skilled worker like me to work for a £1 an hour!
Breaks my heart
Fast-fashion is built upon the suffering of millions of workers (90% women, many children) in China, Bangladesh, India, Cambodia… workers who have to endure endless shifts for wages below the poverty line. And let’s not mention the sexual harassment the young female workers suffer in those sweatshops. We all know about this: the exploitation, the pollution of the air and the waterways, the dissapearance of the Aral sea, the cambodian police beating up textile workers asking for a living wage, the mountains of clothes piling up in land-fills all over the world…. Let’s boycott fast-fashion. Let’s share, swap, buy second hand, support fairtrade brands… and above all, do we still need more clothes? This is disgraceful.
These people are refugees, I have been myself once and feel them by watching. They have lost everything and are desperate and therefore some form of work is better for them than unemployment, simply because it will improve their status, so if they are fired, what service has the BBC done for them? It is easy to blame their working conditions by comparing it to yours from your comfort zone.
this is sad it makes me want to cry
So M&S are appalled at the situation? Not so appalled that they move their manufacturing back to the UK and employ their own citizens though.
Everyone should concern & take care with love of kids. They might be the changer or destroyer. I even don’t know what will happen to them but we can change now how we can & help & teach them ethically. I empathize for these kids and I understand how they’re struggling for life. Stop unethical child labour. Consumerism must destroy as soon as possible.
UK has under 18’s working in supermarkets – Is that underage Children working in supermarkets? What do Panorama people think when the person working on the till is asking supervisors to verify alcohol sales to adults? Nobody likes the outdated working practices of countries in that region & nearby Romania also only pay £1 per hour – which is why so many come to UK hoping for work in places such as Sports Direct or Agriculture
Sickening !
Well.. they are working illegally surely Turkey need to change their laws with Syrian refugees than M&S change their supplier
as sad as it is, what’ll happen to those folks now? they wanted to work, despite the pay. will they be taken care of?
Question – are Syrian Refugee children allowed to attend school in Turkey?
This includes India and other countries.
,,not acceptable?,, ….are u kidding ! All these high street brands are doing the same thing ! Slave labour is the base of their business and gov is in the bed with them !
Hey people of Internet It’s a common exercise in my beautiful country even my uncle used to hire people without health insurance or etc.
Went to M and S recently shoes made in India Cambodia and Bangladesh retailing at £58 could not for the life of me understand how they make any profit on them . I do not go there anymore after they deserted british workers for the super profit margin
If the president erdogan takes this journalism personal and regard it as an act of attack against his party or country Then I would say ok he manipulate things for the cause he believe in

Serves them right, probably not wanted in that country either.
This is a domestic issue for Turkey… how about the British broadcasting corporation do the job the British licence fee payer funds them to do and actually report the news.
M&S WTF
britan closed door for refugees. syrian parents have no job, try staying hungry for a week, what comes first hunger to over come this they are pushed to work,. retailers squeeze every cent, have you seen clothing prices have never increased in the last decade. we talk of responsible sourcing. try contributing more BBC from your side to act on a foundation that can deliver results. we will appreciate your reporting once you do this.
I go to m&s….
