Starmer’s greatest speech? Tories stunned into lethal silence by extraordinary oratory – Blog

Florence Murphy
I lost both of my grandparents to covid. They passed away within two hours of each other on the same day. They were brilliant, true and honest people who loved life. We unfortunately hardly got to see my grandad who passed away with Alzheimers in a care home on his own. We didn’t know that my grandma passed away until she wasn’t picking up her phone until she was discovered by my dad who found her deceased on her own at home. We absolutely respected the rules of isolation during the lockdown period and can’t believe what this ruling government has done. We are devastated that we couldn’t visit them. I think that the news that my grandma couldn’t see her husband or her family and friends ultimately broke her heart. We still mourn and regret the actions we should have taken, now seeing what our leaders have done. My grandparents both died alone but we inseparable in life. I know that they’re together in a far better place than this.

The first time I’ve listened to an MP’s speech in full length for a long time

BevsArtsandCrafts
Totally agree with everything Starmer says. The guilt has been profound lately as I couldn’t be with my Mum before she died 😢😢😢
Kenosis
Wow wow wow. Now that is a scathing and honest response that merits applause.
Max Bateman
Bravo. I’m going to imagine Boris takes no ownership for his actions and somehow makes this about something the Labour Party did when they were in power like he always does.
Timothy Brockbank
I can’t believe that the front bench are laughing it’s disgraceful behavior
Heine Dietiker
The interesting thing about Starmer’s speech is that he chose the topics and phrasing from the perspective of people who have conservative leanings. Decency and law, dignity and sincerity. That’s why the silence on the other side was so great. Starmers strong words hit them hard.
Helen Gilry
Having lost my Mum in a care home and listening over the radio, this brought me to tears.
Vince LeMans
I can’t believe we live in a systems where a prime minister could still somehow keep his job after all those allegations That’s how week our democracy is
Steve P
That’s what you get with a seasoned prosecutor. Looking the accused in the face and telling the truth to all who can listen in a measured and powerful way.
MalavitaOfBB
“..no matter what party you vote for, honesty and decency matter…!!!” So well said, well done Sir!
Falstaff 1893
A Barrister quoting the Laws broken by the Lawmakers you couldn.t make it up!
Saj K
I bet Boris didn’t even bother listening to the points raised by Starmer, he was just getting ready to give a boiler plate response by reading his notes, classic Boris.
unmastered
Fair play on Theresa May, at least she had the dignity to resign when the public turned their backs on her.
Tac
A few minutes after this speech and umpteen apologies, the PM sat there laughing.
Englebert Everything
How do we get to the point where a labour leader quotes Margaret Thatcher?
T.P. McKenna
That will go down as one of the finest Common’s addresses by a leader of the opposition. It will be quoted for generations to come.
Fox Kitten
Well I must admit, that was a superb speech. I didn’t think he had it in him.
South West
Trade union representative and Labour voter here, not a big fan of keir however this is a fabulous speech one of the best I’ve been in the commons for a long time.
3D Railworks
WOW what statement, I was Tory and a Borris fan but after this Borris must go and if there was an election tomorrow I would vote Labour!!
A W
“To govern this country is an honor, not a birth right, it is an act of service to the British people, not the keys to court to parade to your friends” – absolutely summarizes these politicians coming out of ETON. 👏🏼
Mike Parker
Starmer quoting Thatcher – a big reach across the room if ever I saw it.
John Gibson
His best speech and performance in Parliament yet. The silence on the opposition benches is a testament to the message that echoes across the UK from all who believe Johnson should go.
paul murray
WOW! Simply, wow! Didn’t have reason to think that Starmer had it in him but that speech is the definition of tearing a new one.
Jonathan McD
“a tissue of nonsense”, Boris Johnson. Shows the mark of the man that is supposed to lead our country, for it is our country not his! He has to go!
Dave Eakins
I watched it live and thought the speach was outstanding. Everything he said wasn’t an exaggeration and he wasn’t being economal with the truth – it was the whole truth and nothing but the truth
Zac Robinson
Credit to Stir. Any long speech deserves praise. But as Stir said, this is only a part of the report. The fact there was a party a day before my birthday (13th of November 2020.) I know which direction my vote is going. And Boris can go packing back to America
Philip Kavadias
Everything the Tories have done over the last 10 years has been detrimental to the majority. People are just so used to it now, it’s like chronic pain. You accept it’s there and try to deal with it. But a government shouldn’t be a chronic pain. It should be there to make the lives of the majority better. The Tories have failed at that.
Jay Sykes
Regardless of the speech (which was spot on), it’s just really respectful to hear a quieter dignity in the House of Commons. I’ve been so consistently deterred and annoyed by the near constant noise and jeering. That first half of Starmer’s address, and the hush through which it was observed, is truly a breath of fresh air.
Josh Baker
I wouldve been more aggressive but in the context of what he was going for i thought he did really well
tisme agen
Not Kier Starmer’s biggest fan but he got this speech bang on the button, highlighted all the right points. Boris isn’t fit to run a country club never mind a country.
Mark S.
Interesting that the Tory benches were very quiet during Starner’s speech. One would expect lots of heckling as usual. Perhaps they feel that the wind has turned against BoJo?
Dalgety4
Truly the first time that Mr Starmer has impressed me in the way that he delivered his point. More of the same please.
Money
Keir Starmer literally at his best. He has wielded the powers of his prosecutorial experience, forensic abilities and unblemished character in order to hit home the message that “don’t insult the intelligence of the people of this country.”
geekyalias
It’s impressive how many people here think their opinions represent the whole of the British public…
Raymond Sawyer
Keir Starmer is showing he is a statesman in this speech and is a Prime minister in waiting
Louis Meek
I think everyone is missing a major point. The PM’s response to every single topic that was brought up was ‘the public want us to get on with the vaccine roll out / care about Ukraine and Russia issues’ In actual fact all the British public really care about is whether the Tory party broke the rules or not whilst we we’re following them. You can ask every single woman, man, in the country what do they care about more about….what’s going on elsewhere in the world or what happened during lockdowns and restrictions…..I can categorically say that Britain cares more about the latter.
Petyr Kowalski
Excellent speech and great summary of how we all feel about Jonson and those in his orbit.
Bbb BBbb
It really is disgusting that Johnson sits there shaking his head, as if he has done nothing wrong.
Bittersweet
I’m impressed, Keir Starmer gets another point. I’m not his biggest fan, but kudos for laying this out in this way. He’s absolutely right
Steve Brown
Kudos to Keir. A brilliant speech. Unfortunately BoJo will take no notice of the report and will try and ride out this storm.
Jonathan Wetherell
His best speech so far, by far. I hope enough of the voting public hear it and take note. The ERG Party will take little heed.
John Booth
‘A man without shame’ summarily identifies the individual that is the PM.
James Morrison
Calm, collected and sincere. Impressive. Unlike the other side, blustered, venomous and misleading. He cant hide behind a report release date.
colin mccarthy
If there was an,”Order of the Boot”,I would give it to the Prime Minister,(RIP).
Daniel
Definitely the best from Starmer, yet. And the best from Theresa May, frankly. To the person in the comments who says they feel ashamed to be English, please don’t. Johnson doesn’t represent us, even though that is precisely what he should do. He must go, but we must learn from this period in politics and do our best to not let it happen again.
Stephen Reid
BOOOMMMM and with this statement, kier now gets my vote. Bozo and CONServatives can literally do one.
MillywiggZ
Blotto Bojo and Kegger Kier were both caught out. But he’s actually speaking truth for once, good speech.
PEAKY PART TIMERS
I’m not a labour supporter but it was a excellent speech well done.
Gaby Meyer
Splendid speech. What a different moral compass!
Tomsdottir
I lost a dear friend to suicide during lockdown. The misery of his enforced isolation during his chronic depression was, I’m sure, a factor in his death. He was a person of such kindness, generosity and integrity. His life was one of service in the public sphere and he had already made significant and positive changes through his work. Now all of what he could have been and done is lost. The laughter of these jeering clowns is a mockery of him and all the others who died alone.
Jackfrost
Conservatives laughing it’s disgraceful! Honesty and decency is the least our leaders should be
Peter Gaskin
I’m only surprised that he didn’t call the Speaker M’lud. A closing speech from a superb exponent of the art. I notice that the benches behind Bozo were mostly silent.
Brian Freeman
Interesting, and depressing, that we are reflecting the same scenarios and arguments to which our American neighbours are, only now, beginning to see a finale.
Robert Catterall
You can’t shame Johnson: he’ll hold this, and any other, criticism as a badge of honour
DM
Remembering my grandad and his hugely restricted funeral right now.
Thewhale
I have seen murderers express more empathy than Boris and his front bench
Stuart Hardy
Well said… personally I find it ironic that our gracious queen has always put her office first including what must been difficult task recently by stripping Andrew of his honours & duties. I am staggered that most of the Conservative MPs are afraid to act resolutely in matter by forwarding a vote of No confidence in their Government. Those who won’t act now will lose their seats in the next General election. People won’t forget this, they can be assured of
Joe Bristol
What a way to tear a person a new A Hole. Great speech!!
Facts Don't Care About Feelings!
What a great speech. 👏👏👏👏 Exactly what I’ve been saying.
Yeeticus
Very very intelligent speech by starmer. I’m by no means a fan but the choice to emphasis the British public sacrifice as still being worth it despite how let down they have been was something that I can imagine will have a good effect. There is no utility in a demoralised people. Also the use of a thatcher quote at a conservative government, I’m sure he knows that quoting her would actually risk the opinion of some of his own supporters. But he knows he wasn’t a speaking to them anyway, this was a speech directed at every conservative. Very very well done, breathe of fresh air compared with what has been an absolutely lacklustre opposition.
Tony Johnston
For once : A brilliant speech touchng on all the issues. All those on the governmemt benches are tarred with the same brush. They have injured and betrayed the Britsh public. Can they ever be forgiven ?
Terry Pankhurst
That was a speech of a prime minister
Grant Dickson
I thought it was an ok response but boris did seem to have more momentum up until Theresa May slapped him down and then Ian Blackford brought the vigour and sternness that i felt Keir missed in this speech. Still overall great stuff but worried this is just yet another scandal that’ll be brushed aside. The met saved Boris, not him or his own party.
Joseph Turner
A lawyer, shredding the defense.
Twiggs Games
I’m no starmer fan at all but wow that was a strong speech 👏
Robert Wilkes
Wow! At last! Starmer shows his class; and I tend to vote Tory!
EM176
Great speech fair play to him.
Vincent Causey
The lesson to take away, is never trust anything a politician says.
John Deighan
This was all the more powerful for the absence of theatrics.

roamey
Son: powerful speech, he’s right, how have we come to be governed by these incompetent donkeys? Mother: I blame social media, it’s populism innit? I mean everybody knew he was a liar. Son; yes that’s right, I think I’ll vote for this starmer guy, he seems popular and he’s a good talker. 😂😂😂
Jonathan Frost
I am not a Starmer fan but I commend this speech for its balance and integrity.
Daniel Oliver
I cant believe he used Thatchers words against him incredible
Ant W
Fantastic address, this is the Labour leader we’ve been waiting for 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Jimmy Taylor
Not a Labour man, but a brilliant speech from Starner. The clown needs to think of a number between P44 and P46. Laughing stock
saturday player
Starmer looked statesmanlike. His speech hit the mark. Johnson an oafish buffoon.
Anthony Smith
It’s the quietest the Tory front bench has been in ages. Nothing Stsrmer said can be denied, not even by those liars
Charlie Andor
I’m sorry, my British friends, but at what time did you think it was a good idea to vote this man into office in the first place?
The Mother of Coincidences
I feel for everybody. Even the Prime Minister
Cath Fuches
I’m no fan of Starmer, I’m too left, but he has spoken many words that have been in my own mind, described so much that I have felt. TORIES OUT, JOHNSON IN JAIL.
robert harriman
I’m not a Starmer supporter but his words were absolutely spot on. I hope the backbenchers were listening as the PM and his cabinet are without conscience, Starmers words will mean nothing to them.
Kane
Brilliant speech. I’m beginning to like Starmer.
This Bushnell
May the whole of humanity grow into the integrity elucidated in this speech.
Bb Mm
I want to know what Boris will expect us to wait for after we’ve waited for the investigation
tanager123
Corrupt PM and party need to go once and for all. Then parliament can get on with other things including tackling gas and electric increases which worry most in the UK
Philip Payne
Starmer is usually just a wet blanket but this was one of his best speeches. Well done
Phillip Rickard
Love watching Boris Johnson squirming. The pain on his face and in his body language is like food to my soul. He sold this country out for a shot at PM, a coveted role of his. Goes to show you, all that glitters isn’t gold.
Alan Partridge
I’m not a great fan of politics but that speech was bang on the mark. For god sake man GO!
Medieval Folk Dance
The greatest speech of the day was Ian Blackford refusing to cow tow to paltry rules and withdraw claiming PM Johnson had willingly misled parliament.

Loki's children
What a fantastic speech one for the history books

G & M
Sits there looking at the floor and shaking his head like a 5 year old being told off.
Ambrose Harper
That was an excellent speech 👏
Adam Jeayes
And later, BJ said he’ll make a decision when the police have finished their investigations, whether to publish in full or not! After telling us to wait for the full report! Wow. Going back on his previous word to publish in full, and confirming that he gets to mark, or indeed hide, his own assessment! 🤬 that will be widely attacked!
Martha Shandley
A man without shame. Well that about wraps it up nicely. Great speech.
phil cudworth
Great speech. Labour as bad as tories though when it comes down to it. The system is broken.
Erica Fiore
Did you notice Priti Patel agreeing with Keir Starmer while Johnson was shaking his head ? . Speaks a thousand words Boris …
Stephen Smith
This was not only Stramer’s greatest speech, it was one of the greatest speeches ever given in the House of Commons.
Matt Watson DIY Musician
I’m embarrassed and ashamed to be English. Johnson is liability, a liar, a charlatan, likely a criminal. I disown any allegiance to this nation. I am ideologically homeless. Starmer made a great speech.
STACJA EMIGRACJA - PRAWDZIWE ŻYCIE W UK
Couldn’t be more to the point. Starmer showed some balls finally.
Keith White
I’m no fan of Mr Starter, or the Labour party but that is the greatest speech that I’ve heard in over 30 years., Maybe even longer. It has done more for the Labour party today. Any person with a moral compass would have done the right thing and resigned. The Tories are tainted whichever way you look at this.
Paul.
Possibly the best damming speech I’ve ever seen.
Dale Hanson
Sir Keir broke the Tories over his great speech Resign Prime Minister.
Tembo Mchanga
An impressive and clever speech, quoting Thatcher was a stroke of genius
Graham Hewett
Pure politics. The saints are having a field day of self righteousness. The wheels will turn. I’m unbiased because all politics is for those who twist everything to suit themselves.
LeBon TV
Absolutely spot-on phenomenal delivery
Steve Callum
the first truly great words Kier has said that i respect. He was completley correct in his speech in every way. Boris Johnson needs to GO and go NOW!
Me Myself
We need a NEW POLITICAL PARTY, because all those that are available now, are not worth a cup of contaminated pond water……none of them!
TFG
His speech had me welling up, perfectly put but sadly it was directed at a child
Jake Baker
“First duty of the government is to uphold the law…” Thatcher.
Issy Ram
Wow! That speech was compelling and on point. Johnson has no shame.
Psychotic Channel
I have just 4 years in uk,just learning ur politics now,but damn…he is right in every word, this is pure savage, and true
anthony mcadams
I never thought I would say it, but I am voting Labour next time round, its time to go Boris. Time to go.
grimTales1
Brilliant, a very strong speech and heartfelt too.
Anne Donnellan
Similar story in Ireland. To date people are walking round muzzled in open air. People buried family in lonely circumstances. During this time politicians and journalists partied
C439672-D
He can’t even look up. What a disgrace he is. He thinks this will just go away.
axim breeze
and Starmer stood behind Boris even though he had access to all the data on covid deaths and is complicit in supporting the narrative of death doom and gloom. no excuses from any of them
Danny El Expendable
Boris isn’t going to print Sue Greys report in full, is he?
Ali
Even though he has given a good speech, This is the first speech since 2020 in which was good. If anyone truly believes that replacing Boris with Kier starmer is the better option you are a fool. This man is a million times worse than Boris.
Mark Lockett
Good speech well delivered, though it has to be said Starmer had the widest open goal we have ever witnessed.
Ronald Giroux
“We are all equal but some of us are more equal than others!”
Nick Meteor
At last Starmer shows that he does have some spine and talent for politics beyond Labour
Mick James
Why is no one mentioning anything about the behaviour of the civil servants? The buck does stop with the prime minister, but party after party was organised and attended by civil servants. The target seems to be Boris. Starmer was brilliant, we haven’t seem such false sincerity since the Blair years. The pantomime plays on!
Ben Leah
Rare are the occasions I’ll be in agreement with Starmer, but on this he’s put it perfectly.
cupguin
First thing I said was that Starmer had definitely planned for today. Most impressive I’ve seen him yet.
Dominik Doherty
That was probably the most powerful speech I’ve seen Starmer make and it couldn’t have done at a better time to see him grab the bull by the horns and attacking Johnson in this way is I’ll admit admirable and Johnson sitting there and being forced to listen to his speech makes it all the better make no mistake Johnson is finished if I had to pick a number I’ll give him three weeks maximum before he resigns or gets kicked out by his own party.
Hilary Kirkby
Starmer is right – the guilt lies the other side of the House.
marloncole
I was first able to vote in 1979 and have voted at every opportunity since. Then and in all that time since, I was told by Tories “we’re crap, but at least we’re not as crap as the other lot”. That line really doesn’t stand up, does it
James Hayden
Who wrote that speech for him but bravo 👏👏👏
John L
Brilliant speech, much more of that Mr Starmer and you will find yourself Prime Minister.
Darth Wiizius
And so it begins. Finally Starmer started saying what we all have been saying, the case for the prosecution has begun.
James Alexander
To be fair the whole speech was impressive… Completely nailed Johnson.
Bryan Clarke
Johnson has no guilt…and that’s the big problem. This monster must go!
Robert McKinnon
Clucking bell !! Not a fan of Starmer but this was powerful stuff.
sonny irish
Britain went from having Sybil Fawlty in charge (Teresa May ) to having Manuel in charge.Actually in fairness Manuel might be a better PM
Orchid House
Liars should never be given a position of power where people depend upon hearing the truth to inform the opinions and decisions.
Iman-Ali Beg
I have never seen the Tories look so uncomfortable, did you see them looking at their watches and then at the speaker! Lol
arronstone
Notice how whenever Starmer speaks the truth, BJ is always looking at his notes. Not even man enough to look him in the eye.
Betting Pete
What a great speech
Cliff Matthews
Starmer was a remainer and still is, this is what his intentions is all about !
Vatten Poel
Genuine question: When you people say the “british people” does it include the nothern Irish?
PengWin76
My question is “how corrupt is Mr Speaker” because he doesn’t seem at all clued up in who this Prime Minister actually is.
Dan Hitchman
It’s amazing to me that the Prime Minister of Britain is being rightfully chastised and potentially booted for he and his cabinet’s flagrant disregard for the law for having “boozy parties,” but in the U.S. a former President and his minions, having stoked a bloody attempted insurrection, are allowed to walk free with zero consequences.
Michelle Norris
Please email or write to your Conservative M.P. to request they submit their letter of no confidence in Boris Johnson’s leadership, thank you.
John Waller
I don’t like this labour leader but this is the best I’ve heard him talk this is really good well done Starmer
Justin Neill
Patel squirming, Mogg depressed, Raab in a trance, Sunak trying to make his mask bigger and Truss looks impressed… and quite jealous.
Robert Macleod
About time he got his act together.well done
badbones777
Fair play, I think he’s a bit too centrist to what I’d prefer out of Labour, but that was brilliant.
Marvin T P Android
Not a fan of Starmer but he can hit the target once in a while.
robert grifiths
Best speech was the SNP leader told the truth and was asked to leave unbelivable.
walid princo
He teared him to shreds, hats off!
N430
To be fair that was a bloody good speech.
Richard Harrison
The people that voted Tory should be utterly ashamed of themselves.
Jean Genie
Well done Keir Starmer, if only you could bring yourself to be as harsh on the Israeli position I might be able to take you seriously. In any case, I would like to see you have your day in Westminster as PM. Given the choice you are pick of the bunch despite some dubious foreign policies and relations with owners of the popular press.
Justin Neill
That was awesome from Starmer. The look on the faces of Johnson’s front bench said it all. As for Johnson himself, his face was hidden for most of it.
Internet Police
He works with these people day in day out, like a big family, but wow iconic statements in the history of UK politics, I think that gruelling was more than any Police man or judge could press, Prince Phillip would of liked that I bet.
Greg Greg
Contempt dripping from every word well done Kier tar the backbenches with the shame they will carry for propping up this disgrace of a human being
jayne nellis
,well done to you sir straight to the point Tory front benches hang their heads in shame those that didn’t should have
Happy Dace
A fantastic and accurate speech . Just should have finished by saying …. ” Prime Minister , you are a complete and utter kant ! ” .
Mikey Johnson
Stunned to lethal silence by amazing oratory…. Nonsense. He’s finally, FINALLY acted a half decently as a member of the opposition. Conservatives have been silenced by half decent speech.
Judge Dredd
The problem with Starmer is hes a weapons grade panderer..he refused to answer Andrew Marrs question that asked he accepted the scientific fact which it is and is taught to primary school children that only a woman has a cervix ..he didn’t want to upset the militant gender squad so made him self look foolish..if he’s willing to pander on that what else will he bend on
charlie lynes
It seems to me, the question that needs putting to Boris is simply, “what does the word” responsibility” actually mean to you?” So many times he takes “responsibility” for scandle but it is just meaningless words. ☮❤🙏
Mitschie Waldmann
It was his greatest speech. Full stop! Btw…I’ve watched the debate and this pathetic spectacle made me very sad. I now understand that Boris Johnson will never take responsibility, never do the decent thing and resign. He is a narcissist who does not know shame. Furthermore I also realized that the opposition has to stand their grounds, fight back and remind the public of the misdealing of this government.
Jamie Coats
The more descriptive and emotive the speech of his, the more disgusted I am with the fact that he can’t relate it to the fact that he in the labour party wanted even more Draconian lockdowns. I don’t mind which side of the political spectrum you vote, please just stop and put that aside and think about the emotive words he’s using and then understand that this is the very guy who wanted for harsher draconian in lockdown measures.
Alexander Morton
This is an example of why Starmer is the right man for the job of Labours leader. With a criminal government a criminal prosecutor is the best way to hold them to account.
anthony moody
Great oratory, and so correct.
Nick 303
Inspiring indeed. Perhaps not all politicians are corrupt.
V M
Fantastic speech from our future PM. Long live Labour 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Ian Watson
Absolutely. I am a preacher so pulic speaking is my business and that was a perfect speech.
channelsixtyeight068
The Tory Party has always taken the view that it doesn’t matter how you get the desired result, just so long as you get it.
PengWin76
Starmer should have ended this with “and I don’t accept your answer as it will be lies” before Johnson even stood up to talk.
Justice Hussein
Frankly, any Tory leader will be better Labour. I just can’t trust them security and immigration.
Ben The Boss Jackson
Well done Keir starmer! brilliant speech!
Ste Tomlinson
Absolutely nothing at all is going to be done about this by the Met Police. Nothing. And the answer is simple. They’ve already assessed what happened and decided in 2020, and since, that no action will be taken. When the events actually took place, everyone there, going in or coming out, would have had to record their full details in the entry log at the police/security entrance at the head of the street. Their purpose of visit and any bags would have been searched. Any events happening would have been reported to higher ranks at the time, who probably in turn asked their higher ranks, what to do. The decision taken then was to let it go ahead, and NOT intervene. So The Met have already decided what action to take. i.e. NONE! The officers on duty ALL sign The Official Secrets Act, which forbids them, on pain of a prison sentence, not to speak to anyone about it. The one person who can overrule that is a High Court Judge, The Police Minister, Home Secretary or PRIME MINISTER! And THAT really isn’t going to happen!  Can anyone seriously think The Met are going to review a decisions taken by a very high rank, going back to over 18 months ago? At best any people who DID attend/organise any such event will get a 10,000 pound fine. It’s not even a jury trial to convict. They only have to declare it WAS a party that contravened the legislation on the day, which they’ve already decided they DIDN’T! Move on please, there is nothing to see here! Evening all!🤔😡
John thomas
Why not play Johnson’s response, accusing STARMER of letting Jimmy Saville get away with his crimes
