Tesla imagined impossible technologies more than a hundred years ago. He and Thomas Edison have arguably had more of an impact on modern technology than any other scientists.

Tesla’s biggest contribution may be his innovations in alternating current technology, and the invention of the AC motor.
The adoption of this technology was not easy because Thomas Edison’s direct current systems had been the standard early on. What is AC and DC, and why is one superior to the other?

Atoms have a positively charged nucleus and negatively charged electrons surrounding the nucleus. But electrons in the outermost shell of the atom, called the valence shell, can sometime become free due to external forces. These electrons can move from one atom to another. This is what can cause a movement of charge, which is what electricity is. An electrical current is the flow of free electrons from one atom to another.

The relationship between current, voltage, and resistance is described by Ohm’s law, Voltage = Current x Resistance

Current (amps) is the rate at which the charges flow. It is analogous to the rate of flow of the water in a hose. Voltage (volts) is the force required to make current flow. It is analogous to the water pressure in a hose. Resistance (ohms) is a material’s tendency to resist the flow of charge. This is like diameter of the hose. The smaller the hose, the higher the resistance.

DC is similar to the normal flow of water through the hose that we see. The water flows in one direction. AC is like the water flowing back and forth within the hose 50 or 60 times per second, 50 Hertz or 60 Hertz. This is where the water analogy is not so great, because water doesn’t flow back and forth in a hose.

AC won over DC because of efficiency and power delivery. Power is like the volume of water coming out of the hose.

The formula formula for power is P = I x V. The same amount of power can be transmitted either at high current and low voltage, or low current and high voltage. But one is better than the other.

The longer this cable is, the more resistance there is in the power line. When you pass a current through resistance, you create heat, given by Joule’s equation for electric heat, Heat = I^2 R

Heat is wasted energy, so it is crucial to minimize it. Since I = P/V, if we substitute it back into the heat equation. We see that Heat equals Power squared times resistance R, divided by voltage squared. We want to MAXIMIZE voltage V to minimize heat.

In modern electric power grids, electricity is routinely transmitted for hundreds of kilometers at hundreds of thousands of volts. But voltage can’t be this high when it arrives at your home because it would be dangerous. So, it has to be stepped down before it gets to your house. This is done via a transformer which reduces voltage from hundreds of thousands of volts to between 110 to 240 volts.

This stepping up and stepping down of voltage is where alternating current is superior to direct current. Direct current cannot be easily transformed from low voltage to high voltage and visa versa, but alternating current can. And here’s the reason why: When alternating current passes through a coil, it produces a constantly changing magnetic flux, per Maxwell’s equations. If we put a loop or ring of iron through the coil, it can concentrate the changing magnetic flux to within the ring.

Now if we wind another coil around the other side of this ring, we can create electricity and induce voltage within the new coil. The voltage created in the second coil is proportional to the number of loops we place around the iron ring. Using this method we can transform voltage from high to low and vice versa.

But transformers like this require a time-varying voltage to function, so only alternating current works. In Edison and Tesla’s time, there was no easy way to transform voltage with direct current.

Can devices work equally well with DC or AC current? Many devices—like light bulbs—can.

Was DC really a losing concept? No. Most high tech appliances today that are powered batteries, like your laptop, cell phone, and iPad are all powered by direct current.

Also, in the 20th century, engineers figured out a way to transmit electricity using high voltage direct current, or HVDC. HVDC is even more efficient than high voltage AC for transmitting electricity over very large distances, because smaller cheaper lines can be used to transmit the same amount of power, and there is less induction loss because no changing magnetic field exists with DC, unlike with AC. But the cost of DC transformers is millions of dollars vs. thousands of dollars for AC transformers. So HVDC is only cost effective for very long transmission lines.

Nikola Tesla, (born July 9/10, 1856, Smiljan, Austrian Empire [now in Croatia]—died January 7, 1943, New York, New York, U.S.), Serbian American inventor and engineer who discovered and patented the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery. He also developed the three-phase system of electric power transmission. He immigrated to the United States in 1884 and sold the patent rights to his system of alternating-current dynamos, transformers, and motors to George Westinghouse. In 1891 he invented the Tesla coil, an induction coil widely used in radio technology.

Tesla was from a family of Serbian origin. His father was an Orthodox priest; his mother was unschooled but highly intelligent. As he matured, he displayed remarkable imagination and creativity as well as a poetic touch.

Training for an engineering career, he attended the Technical University at Graz, Austria, and the University of Prague. At Graz he first saw the Gramme dynamo, which operated as a generator and, when reversed, became an electric motor, and he conceived a way to use alternating current to advantage. Later, at Budapest, he visualized the principle of the rotating magnetic field and developed plans for an induction motor that would become his first step toward the successful utilization of alternating current. In 1882 Tesla went to work in Paris for the Continental Edison Company, and, while on assignment to Strassburg in 1883, he constructed, after work hours, his first induction motor. Tesla sailed for America in 1884, arriving in New York with four cents in his pocket, a few of his own poems, and calculations for a flying machine. He first found employment with Thomas Edison, but the two inventors were far apart in background and methods, and their separation was inevitable.

In May 1888 George Westinghouse, head of the Westinghouse Electric Company in Pittsburgh, bought the patent rights to Tesla’s polyphase system of alternating-current dynamos, transformers, and motors. The transaction precipitated a titanic power struggle between Edison’s direct-current systems and the Tesla-Westinghouse alternating-current approach, which eventually won out.

Tesla soon established his own laboratory, where his inventive mind could be given free rein. He experimented with shadowgraphs similar to those that later were to be used by Wilhelm Röntgen when he discovered X-rays in 1895. Tesla’s countless experiments included work on a carbon button lamp, on the power of electrical resonance, and on various types of lighting.

In order to allay fears of alternating currents, Tesla gave exhibitions in his laboratory in which he lit lamps by allowing electricity to flow through his body. He was often invited to lecture at home and abroad. The Tesla coil, which he invented in 1891, is widely used today in radio and television sets and other electronic equipment. That year also marked the date of Tesla’s U.S. citizenship.

Westinghouse used Tesla’s alternating current system to light the World’s Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1893. This success was a factor in their winning the contract to install the first power machinery at Niagara Falls, which bore Tesla’s name and patent numbers. The project carried power to Buffalo by 1896.

In 1898 Tesla announced his invention of a teleautomatic boat guided by remote control. When skepticism was voiced, Tesla proved his claims for it before a crowd in Madison Square Garden.

The inventor, Nikola Tesla, dreamt of wireless power. Among his work in the realm of electricity he built a coil, later named the Tesla coil, which could illuminate lamps from across a room and throw the occasional bolt of lightning at the nearest conductor. Tesla coils remain popular today, though often for their ability to put on a fantastic lightning show.

Nikola Tesla believed in wireless power with such an enthusiasm that with the financing of JP Morgan, he constructed a giant apparatus, the Wardenclyffe Tower, at his lab in Shoreham Long Island in 1901. This was before the world was wired.

The idea? To send wireless power around the globe.

Here’s how it works. Run an electric current through a coil of copper wire and the coil will produce a short-range magnetic field. Place a second coil within this field and an electric current will flow through it. The magnetic field has transferred electrical power from one coil to the other. This principle is called induction, and it has been understood for more than a century. Induction is what charges a wireless electric toothbrush, for example, and it works well over extremely short distances. Pull the coils apart and the power transfer ceases.

It turns out that the trick to longer distance power transfer is the same principle an opera singer uses to shatter a wine glass from across the room; it’s called resonance. For the opera singer, when the frequency of the sound wave matches the unique resonant frequency of a glass, the acoustic energy is converted to kinetic energy at the highest possible efficiency. The energy then builds inside the glass until it shatters.

The coils that Witricity uses to transfer power wirelessly are magnetic resonators. First, a rapidly oscillating electric current is applied to a coil at its specific resonant frequency. This creates a magnetic field in the region around the coil. Tune a second coil to the same resonant frequency as the source and it will couple, resonating anywhere within that region and converting the oscillating magnetic field into an electrical current within the second coil. This response is called highly coupled magnetic resonance, and it hasn’t been done before. By attaching the second coil to a device such as the battery of an electric car, or a mobile phone, this current can be made to do useful work. The source can be either centimetres or meters away from the device being powered and can deliver power through walls or around metal obstacles. The power can even be distributed across multiple devices at once. So by a simple trick of physics, power is transferred wirelessly. Nikola Tesla would be proud.

Witricity is developing a system, not a specific product, and as a result they have many different platforms on display at once. In Witricity’s demonstration rooms a flat-screen television is powered using a resonator hidden in its base. Laptops, with their batteries removed and replaced by resonators, flicker on, and flash lights glow when placed next to a source concealed behind a bulletin board. The system can even be extended beyond the range of a single source using passive resonators. By this method, many cabinet lights are lit well beyond the expected range of the single source below.

The applications of wireless power in a wired world are endless and rethinking infrastructure may be decades away. A simple first step could be removing costly batteries from things as mundane as computer accessories and, instead, placing a small wireless resonator in the computer itself, tackling waste by centimetres at first.

Wireless power has in fact been available for decades, just waiting for a clever user to snatch it out of the air. It exists in radio and television signals and is available 24 hours a day. Intel labs in Seattle, Washington, are pointing their devices at television antennas and powering small but useful gadgets solely off of the energy that carries TV programs.

Josh Smith says wireless ambient radio power harvesting might yield a milliwatt or so. To a device, that’s not very much. It would require 20 milliwatts to keep a mobile phone in standby mode, but it might be enough to perform some useful low-power functions.

Nikola Tesla’s tower was torn down in 1916. Mr Morgan, his financier, was uninterested in broadcasting electricity that people could so easily harvest for free. Instead we strung wires and built meters. Tesla knew that wireless power transfer was possible but he never saw his dream realized – it seems that soon enough we will.
