An Affront to the Public Conscience

The phrase “an affront to the public conscience” is not uncommon in the English language, and it can be used in
various contexts to describe actions or events that are perceived as
morally reprehensible or offensive to societal values.

Page Description

Examining how certain actions and injustices violate the public conscience and societal values.

1 Untouchable

How can human behavior be so cruel that completely innocent people suffer grave injustices?

The essential question in simple words is:

How can human beings be so cruel that innocent people are severely mistreated by the justice system?

We witness the perversion of justice. The bag of tricks is used to its extreme, as exemplified on a large scale in the British Post Office scandal. This situation reveals the disturbing behavior of people in groups, the profound imbalance of power between institutions and individuals, and the abandonment of honesty and truth. The gloves are off, and there’s no regard for fairness or respect. As we enter this deceptive negative spiral, it becomes not just an issue of individual misconduct but a societal failing that undermines the very rules of a decent society.

2 A kind of con man

The pendulum of incomprehensible human behavior has swung too far, reflecting the mindset of a con man.
To give just one example, Diederik Stapel.

3 A Millstone Around One’s Neck

Living in a situation where, despite being completely innocent, you are trapped by the misuse of power is unbearably serious, leading some to feel so imprisoned that they are driven to take their own lives. The British Post Office Scandal is living proof of what can go disastrously wrong, highlighting the unimaginable injustices that should be impossible. Alan Bates and his colleagues have fought relentlessly from the beginning, while the Post Office fought tooth and nail to place innocent people in the most impossible situations.

4 The Crime Scene – There are a Mass of Issues

The only point is that pillars of society, who have done nothing wrong, can find themselves in circumstances so dire that their lives are effectively ruined. It goes on and on, so there is no doubt about it. You have no idea what might be coming next.

Speaking to Carole Walker ahead of the inquiry, journalist and author Nick Wallis explains the Post Office scandal, where hundreds of former sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses were wrongly accused of stealing.

Their convictions were later overturned after it was discovered that a computer error was the cause of accounting shortfalls.

Nick Wallis said: ” And the government has been forced to set aside a billion pounds in compensation to those who a. were prosecuted and have now had their convictions quashed and b. who were forced to pay back money with menaces, and that number runs into the thousands.”

His book ‘The Great Post Office Scandal’ details the impact of the errors on the Post Office workers falsely accused.

He said: “This happened on an industrial scale.

“700 people falsely prosecuted, thousands more forced to pay back money that they never owed in the first place, creating broken lives, broken families and mental health problems that will continue to reverberate for many, many years to come.”
