Page Description
Boeing’s failures reveal a deeper pattern seen across institutions: ignored warnings, silenced truth, & lives damaged when systems protect themselves first.
Boeing’s recent crises—from the 737 MAX disasters to the troubling door incident—are not isolated technical failures. They reveal a deeper, systemic pattern that echoes across many trusted institutions worldwide. From the British Post Office’s wrongful prosecutions to the Zeebrugge ferry disaster and miscarriages of justice, the same troubling sequence unfolds: warnings ignored, whistleblowers silenced, and vulnerable people harmed. This page explores how Boeing exemplifies a broader institutional failure—where economic pressure, denial, and self-preservation repeatedly override safety, truth, and justice.

Can Boeing Overcome Their Recent Challenges? | CNBC Marathon
17 feb 2025 #CNBC
CNBC Marathon explores the different struggles the aircraft company Boeing, has faced these past couple of years.
Boeing’s 747 is one the most recognizable planes to take to the skies with its iconic hump, four engines, extensive landing gear and sheer size. Since its first commercial flight in 1970, Boeing’s 747 jumbo jet has flown more than 3.5 billion passengers. But over the last few decades, airlines have looked for more ways to cut costs and to make airplanes more efficient. Two engine jets can now fly near the same capacity and further than older four engine planes like Boeing’s 747 and the Airbus A380. CNBC visited Boeing’s Everett, Washington factory to see the last 747 roll off the production line. It will go to Atlas Air for cargo deliveries.
Five years ago, 346 people were killed in two plane crashes that happened five months apart, in Indonesia and Ethiopia. Both were Boeing 737 Max 8 planes. Then, this past January, Boeing came inches from yet another catastrophe as a door plug blew off an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 plane at 16,000 feet shortly after taking off from Portland, Oregon. Preliminary reports said the door panel that flew off the Max 9 appeared to be missing four key bolts.
Boeing has struggled to get back on track after the fatal 737 Max 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019. The company announced it’s in talks to buy back fuselage maker Spirit AeroSystems. A company Boeing spun off in 2005. Both companies have struggled with quality issues in recent years. Spirit AeroSystems, however, also supplies parts to Boeings main rival Airbus and other plane manufacturers making the deal a little complex.

Boeing: Lessons from a company in crisis | Jonathan Marks | TEDxPSU
13 apr 2024
Lawyer and ethicist, Jonathan Marks, explores what institutions so often get wrong in a crisis. Using Boeing as a recent case study, he tells organizations to throw away what he calls “the Crisis Playbook”—a set of tactics designed to rebuild trust. He urges them instead to focus on the more difficult work of becoming truly worthy of our trust. As Marks says: “Trust is what gets us on an airplane. Trustworthiness is what keeps that plane in the air!”
Jonathan Marks is a Scotsman, who trained as a human rights lawyer in England, and now teaches at the Pennsylvania State University, where he is director of the Bioethics Program. He writes and lectures on ethics, law, and policy. His last TEDxPSU talk, “In Praise of Conflict,” was picked up by TED.com and received more than one million views in its first few weeks — not bad for a human but somewhat less impressive in the world of cat videos! That talk also became the framework for his book, “The Perils of Partnership: Industry Influence, Institutional Integrity, and Public Health,” published by Oxford University Press in 2019, and shortlisted for the Book Award of the North American Society for Social and Political Philosophy.

The two Boeing 737 Max crashes refer to two fatal crashes involving the Boeing 737 Max aircraft, which occurred in October 2018 and March 2019. The crashes resulted in the deaths of 346 people.
The first crash, Lion Air Flight 610, occurred on October 29, 2018, when a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft crashed into the Java Sea off the coast of Indonesia. All 189 passengers and crew members on board were killed.
The second crash, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, occurred on March 10, 2019, when a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. All 157 passengers and crew members on board were killed.
The cause of the two crashes was found to be a software system known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), which was designed to prevent the aircraft from stalling. However, the system was found to have a “fatal flaw” that caused it to malfunction, sending the aircraft into a dive.
The flaw was linked to a faulty sensor that provided incorrect data to the MCAS system, causing it to activate repeatedly and push the aircraft’s nose down. Pilots were unable to override the system, leading to the crashes.
The crashes led to the grounding of all Boeing 737 Max aircraft worldwide and a significant financial and reputational loss for Boeing. The company faced lawsuits and regulatory investigations, and the incident raised questions about the safety of automated systems in aviation. Boeing has since worked to update the MCAS system and implement additional safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Gepubliceerd op 13 mrt. 2019
Boeing calls its 737 the most popular jet aircraft of all time.
The US plane maker hoped its new 737 MAX 8 would bring in a new era of passenger safety.
However, two fatal crashes in five months are raising serious questions.
Aviation analysts have noted remarkable similarities between Sunday’s Ethiopian Airlines crash, and one involving the same model of aircraft in Indonesia in October.
More countries are grounding the planes, and passengers are cancelling their trips.
But Boeing and US aviation regulators say there’s nothing to worry about.
So who’s right? And will Sunday’s crash affect confidence in modern air travel?

Why The Boeing 737 Max Has Been Such A Mess

Five years ago, 346 people were killed in two plane crashes that happened five months apart, in Indonesia and Ethiopia. Both were Boeing 737 Max 8 planes. Then, this past January, Boeing came inches from yet another catastrophe as a door plug blew off an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 plane at 16,000 feet shortly after taking off from Portland, Oregon. Preliminary reports said the door panel that flew off the Max 9 appeared to be missing four key bolts.
The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into the Alaska Airlines incident. And the Federal Aviation Administration said it found dozens of problems after auditing Boeing’s manufacturing process.
While Boeing and the FAA have responded more aggressively to the Max 9 issue, the FAA production audit found multiple instances where both Boeing and fuselage maker Spirit Aerosystems allegedly failed to comply with manufacturing quality control problems.
Boeing announced major management changes including CEO Dave Calhoun, who was brought in to get the company out of the max crisis in 2019, just announced he’ll be stepping down at the end of 2024.
CNBC explores how the 737 Max crisis unfolded and what the future holds for Boeing’s best selling jet.

| Zembla Onderzoekt
14 jul 2025 #boeing787crash #aviationnews #airindiaplanecrash

Vliegtuigbouwer Boeing verkeert in zwaar weer.
Daarbij volgen onze journalisten nabestaande Huguette Debets.

When it comes to Boeing 737 Max and the two tragic crashes that it was involved in, the question often becomes why Boeing chose to launch this variant in the first place. That clearly deserves to be answered but even if we do, it won’t explain the whole story.
The bigger thing to understand here is how Boeing managed to design and certify an aircraft with a system that should have been the equivalent of having a tiny kitten locked in a cage but instead became a loose tiger.
