The House of Windsor: The British Royal Family

A Royal home and fortress for over 900 years, Windsor Castle, the largest occupied castle in the world, remains a working palace today. Kate the Great (2021) Barely a day goes by without the British Royal Family courting controversy. In the latest drama, Princes William and Harry have made extraordinary public comments shaming the BBC for the way it deceived their mother, Princess Diana. The brothers’ anger follows the findings of an investigation by a former Supreme Court judge which determined that star BBC reporter Martin Bashir not only lied but falsified documents to convince Diana to agree to a tell-all interview about Prince Charles back in 1995. Lord Dyson was also scathing in his condemnation of the BBC for its cover-up. The British broadcaster has now apologised for its actions, as well as for the long-term damage its shoddy journalism caused members of the Royal Family. However, despite this and other royal crises, including the recent death of the Duke of Edinburgh and the ongoing sex scandal involving Prince Andrew, there is some positive news for Buckingham Palace. As Tom Steinfort reports, Kate Middleton, one-time commoner and now the Duchess of Cambridge, has emerged as a potential saviour for the beleaguered royals. When she married William, many dismissed her importance, but a decade on, her no-nonsense approach to royal life is now considered an endearing strength. And in an exclusive interview with 60 MINUTES, Kate’s uncle, Gary Goldsmith, reveals why the future Queen Catherine is ready to wear the crown right now.

For forty years, 60 Minutes have been telling Australians the world’s greatest stories. Tales that changed history, our nation and our lives. Reporters Liz Hayes, Tom Steinfort, Tara Brown, Liam Bartlett and Sarah Abo look past the headlines because there is always a bigger picture. Sundays are for 60 Minutes.

6 What It Was Like For William After Diana | My Mother Diana | Timeline

Back to menu

11 mei 2018

Nearly thirty years after his parents exchanged their wedding vows, Prince William walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey with his new bride. ‘My Mother Diana’ looks at how Diana’s life, her relationship with the House of Windsor, the media and the public have shaped her eldest son, Prince William. When a twenty year-old Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, their wedding at St Paul’s was watched by billions; it was the last great royal wedding to galvanise the British public. But that relationship would develop into a romantic tragedy, whose effects would be more profound than anyone could have imagined. In his marriage to Kate Middleton, Prince William is entering into a new and independent stage of his life…a life in which his mothers influence and presence appear centre-stage and ever-present.. It is easy to forget that William’s formative years were not the idyll with the ’Princess of People’s Hearts’…rather they took place in the midst of a vicious divorce battle. William’s loyalties divided and fought over during the War of the Wales.

‘My Mother Diana’ is the story of Charles and Diana’s marriage from a new and revealing point of view. It’s the story of how their marriage shaped William. It explores the effect of his mother’s relationships, the tell-all book she collaborated on with Andrew Morton, the effects of her Panorama interview and William’s reaction to his father’s relationship with Camilla. On the surface William appears to be a product of the old order, groomed by the House of Windsor. But William is the son of Diana – who transcended celebrity and transformed the monarchy. This film seeks to understand William by exploring his relationship with his mother and examines where William was as key moments of her later life played out; because what she went through made him who he is today Why did William propose using his mother’s engagement ring? And what does it tell us about this future King and the legacy of his mother Diana? Fourteen years after her death Diana’s influence appears undiminished. But will William be the King Diana wished him to be?

Queen Elizabeth II and Britain’s leaders – Britain’s longest reigning monarch | DW Documentary

8 sep. 2022

In memoriam Queen Elizabeth II

[This documentary was originally released in April 2022]

On February 6, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 70th anniversary on the throne. No other head of state has been in power for so long. This film analyzes the fascinating relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and her prime ministers.

Winston Churchill was in love with his young queen. The relationship with Margaret Thatcher was difficult. Then there’s Brexiteer Boris Johnson – this film illuminates the very different relationships Queen Elizabeth has had with the many prime ministers who have served during her long reign.

Filmmakers Katharina Wolff and Larissa Klinker examine Queen Elizabeth II’s role as the symbol of a centuries-old power structure in the United Kingdom. Although the British monarch has no direct political power, the prime minister travels from Downing Street to Buckingham Palace every week for a private audience.

In this film, personal secretaries, political experts and Buckingham Palace insiders reveal what is discussed at these private meetings and how much impact personalities have on the relationship between royalty and the government.

Using archival footage and personal accounts, the film shows how the queen accompanied her prime ministers through their time in office. On September 6, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Liz Truss as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Thank you for sharing this awesome documentary! This stunning couple, with their beautiful children will absolutely be a blessing for the monarchy. Prince William struck Gold when he married Catherine, and Catherine found her perfect husband ..be him a prince or not, they quite obviously married for love, and nothing else. Bless them and their lovely family. Long live the Queen, and best wishes to Charles when he takes the throne,….but hey, I won’t deny, I sooooo look forward to see this couple become king and Queen.

I always thought the way he looked at her in the engagement interview spoke volumes. He adores her. The waiting was clearly so she could go into this step by step and back out. I also feel the break up was for that. For them both to figure things out and MAKE SURE bc if they got back together that was it. I never looked at any of it as some negative as an American. I looked at it like a man that saw what happened to his parents and didn’t want the mistake to occur again. He never had any questions about Kate. He wanted to make sure Kate didn’t have any questions about that life. And frankly Harry ended up making the mistake. The difference in those engagement interviews are night and day.
