What It Was Like For William After Diana | My Mother Diana | Timeline

Back to menu

11 mei 2018

Nearly thirty years after his parents exchanged their wedding vows, Prince William walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey with his new bride. ‘My Mother Diana’ looks at how Diana’s life, her relationship with the House of Windsor, the media and the public have shaped her eldest son, Prince William. When a twenty year-old Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, their wedding at St Paul’s was watched by billions; it was the last great royal wedding to galvanise the British public. But that relationship would develop into a romantic tragedy, whose effects would be more profound than anyone could have imagined. In his marriage to Kate Middleton, Prince William is entering into a new and independent stage of his life…a life in which his mothers influence and presence appear centre-stage and ever-present.. It is easy to forget that William’s formative years were not the idyll with the ’Princess of People’s Hearts’…rather they took place in the midst of a vicious divorce battle. William’s loyalties divided and fought over during the War of the Wales.

‘My Mother Diana’ is the story of Charles and Diana’s marriage from a new and revealing point of view. It’s the story of how their marriage shaped William. It explores the effect of his mother’s relationships, the tell-all book she collaborated on with Andrew Morton, the effects of her Panorama interview and William’s reaction to his father’s relationship with Camilla. On the surface William appears to be a product of the old order, groomed by the House of Windsor. But William is the son of Diana – who transcended celebrity and transformed the monarchy. This film seeks to understand William by exploring his relationship with his mother and examines where William was as key moments of her later life played out; because what she went through made him who he is today Why did William propose using his mother’s engagement ring? And what does it tell us about this future King and the legacy of his mother Diana? Fourteen years after her death Diana’s influence appears undiminished. But will William be the King Diana wished him to be?

Diana, extraordinary woman, beautiful brilliant and kind. She was and will always be the real royal.

Lorie Parker Wade
She was my cousin, we shared a common grandfather a Spencer. So my family was mortified when we realized what was going on and feared for her. The current “Royal” family isn’t even legitimate! Diane would have been the best queen, but lets hope William can do his mother’s legacy justice. Charles needs to crawl up Cam and disappear!

Anthony Gibbs
Man was Diana beautiful. I will never forget how their wedding interrupted my Saturday morning cartoons and how captivated I was with it. To see how it fell to pieces was just disheartening. I’m not even a Brit and it affected me.
Emiline Bellé
Diana was absolutely gorgeous and her fashion sense was to die for. I wish I could dress that way! We really have lost an art form.
moonspots01
I think that the behavior of the Royal Family through most of the latter half of the 20th century is what more or less happened to all of western society in the latter half of the 20th century. The old world evaporated quickly after 1945 and the Royal Family was no more immune to the changes as were everyone else. They just had a lot of scrutiny on them because of who they are. I am not passing judgement on them or society. Just saying that times and attitudes change and we are all affected by it.

Jayne Weaver
Another hit piece on Princess Diana coming out of the British “royal family.” This after the Windsor’s duped her as an 18 year old into being their brood mare. They fail to say that Diana was in love with Charles and that his behavior throughout was appalling and despicable. All in an effort to appease his family and HIS royal duties. NOT Princess Diana’s fault. Notice at the end both of these dolt commenters are completely and utterly wrong not only in their assessment AND in their predictions for the future. Like Andrew, and their associations with known and prolific pedophiles the Windsor family has a LOT of skeletons they should tend to.

We all bought at least one newspaper and/or magazine primarily because this woman was on the cover. The paper press relied on us for the increase in sales. Are we therefore to blame for her death? She could never truly or effectively retire from public life if only because she was mother to a future monarch. And factor in her links to various charities which became high profile due to her invlolvement and the media would remain in attendance. Even in death she’s still in the public eye. The only difference is she can no longer be hurt by the attention.

Don’t know where Professor Anthony Clark got his doctorate, but I do know Diana was not “plucked from obscurity.” Her family, the Spencers, had been aristocrats and Earls for centuries and she had a sad but typically privileged upbringing and was well known inside the kind of circles Charles had to choose from.

Relationships are complicated so easy to judge others as if we’ve never done a mistake. I married the person of my dreams, a kind, generous, honest, faithful and successful handsome man. Yet after 7 years of being married, I divorced him. It’s torturous to live with someone that complains instead of being grateful and nothing makes them happy.

Written and presented by Steve Hewlett, the series is told principally through the first-hand testimony of those who were there: ex-royal advisors, editors, photographers, journalists, royal correspondents – and an enormously rich archive.

This episode looks at how the experience of growing up in the media spotlight has affected Princes William and Harry, and their attitudes to the press and media. Seismic events like the phone-hacking scandal – which started with the royal princes – and the impact of the Leveson Inquiry that followed have tipped the balance of power in their favour.

The relationship between the royal family and the BBC is also examined, the so-called ‘Queengate’ fiasco – where a trailer for a royal documentary was cut as if to show the Queen storming out of a photo session with the American photographer Annie Leibowitz. The programme recounts how, in the aftermath, another still-unseen documentary celebrating the life of Princess Diana was shelved by the corporation.

The programme also looks at the question of succession. For Prince Charles it is now not so much his private life as his personal views that are under the microscope, and their potential impact on his upcoming kingship is explored.

The British Royal Family is a global institution, admired and celebrated around the world and currently enjoying a revival in popular opinion.

From the pomp and pageantry of the Cambridges’ fairytale wedding, through to the birth of Prince George, the announcement of another royal baby, and most recently, the success of Prince Harrys Invictus Games, there is a new generation of Royals on show. Unlike all their predecessors the young Royals appear comfortable with the cameras relaxed, informal and self-deprecating. The message is a new monarchy for a new age.

It is all a far cry from the nightmare of the 1990s where, throughout the so called war of the Waleses, the bitter divisions within the family played out in the full glare of the worlds media. Indeed so acrimonious were the rivalries, they threatened to undermine and destabilise the entire institution.

But it was the tragic and untimely death of Princess Diana in 1997 that would prove to be the nadir of the familys relationship with the press and public. Widely perceived to have played a part in her tragic death, it also marked a turning point for the press and media. Something had to change.

Through interviews with those directly involved on all sides, writer, broadcaster and Guardian journalist Steve Hewlett tells the inside story of how the Royal family set about rehabilitating its battered public image following that devastating decade in this two-part landmark series.

Welcome to Reel Truth History, the home of gripping and powerful documentaries. Here you can watch both full length documentaries and series that explore some of the most comprehensive pieces of world history.
