When I started this website, my thought was simple: “Ze gaan zeggen: ‘Justitie heeft beslist, dat is wat het is.’” — “Justice has decided, and now you have to live with it.”
But the reality is far more tragic. Across the world, millions bear the burden of convictions, while only a fraction are ever exonerated. In the United States, over 2,000,000 people are imprisoned, yet only a small fraction are released after proof of innocence. In the Netherlands, there have been 14 cases of exoneration — 14 lives weighed down by a system that failed them.
These are not mere exceptions. Each case shapes the perception that justice is flawless, that a judge has seen all the facts. Yet systemic failure is real and recurring — and its impact on human dignity and trust in institutions is immense.
This website exists to reflect on that reality: the fragility of justice, the human cost when systems fail, and the urgent need to question, understand, and learn from these failures.
