THE SALT PATH is the profound true story of husband and wife, Raynor and Moth Winn’s 630-mile trek along the beautiful but rugged Cornish, Devon and Dorset coastline. After being forcibly removed from their home, they make the desperate decision to walk in the hope that, in nature, they will find solace and a sense of acceptance. With depleted resources, only a tent and some essentials between them, every step along the path is a testament to their growing strength and determination. THE SALT PATH is a journey that is exhilarating, challenging, and liberating in equal measure. A portrayal of home, how it can be lost and rediscovered in the most unexpected ways.

It’s the bestselling book that’s in the middle of its own seismic plot twist. Raynor Winn’s The Salt Path spent 85 weeks in The Sunday Times Bestsellers List and has just become a film.

But the author’s life-affirming account of how her husband’s illness and losing their money and home put them on a 630-mile coastal walk has been called into question.

The Observer has claimed that not all of the couple’s story stacks up – something strenuously denied by the author.

Niall goes through the claims with Sky News arts and entertainment producer Jayson Mansaray and hears from a journalist who has interviewed Winn, Charlotte Lytton.

James O’Brien speaks to journalist Chloe Hadjimatheou about her investigation into The Salt Path, the bestselling memoir by Raynor Winn that became one of 2025’s biggest literary scandals.

The book, later adapted into a film starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, told the story of Winn and her husband Moth’s 630-mile walk and his terminal diagnosis – one of many claims challenged by reporting from The Observer.

Winn has strongly denied the allegations as questions grow about the memoir’s accuracy and honesty.

Penniless and homeless, Raynor and Moth Winn found fame and fortune with The Salt Path: the “true” story of their 630-mile walk to salvation. It became a global bestseller, selling over 2 million copies, and in 2025 it was adapted into a major film.

It was a heartwarming story of perseverance and hope.

But we can reveal the couple’s tale of endurance was far from the truth.

Ros Hemmings, who was friends with the couple more than two decades ago, says that the story told in The Salt Path makes her ‘feel sick’. She knew them then by their real names – Sally and Tim Walker.

And the story she remembers is different from the one that’s been sold to the world.

The Salt Path was marketed as an “unflinchingly honest” memoir but Chloe Hadjimatheou’s reporting has revealed that the book contains many inaccuracies.

In this next installment of the investigation, we hear from people who appear in the book, whose stories don’t match up with the one told by author Raynor Winn.

Australian couple Joanne & David Parsons share how their meeting with Raynor Winn and her husband Moth was moved by two years in the book with some key facts altered. In Cornwall, café owner Joanna and staff member Bonnie reveal why the dramatic scene set in their family-run café could never have happened, with details in the book that simply don’t match reality.

Chloe examines these accounts alongside social media posts from the Winns’ own son that suggest even more discrepancies between the memoir and real life.

When The Observer revealed last summer that one of Britain’s best-loved memoirs, The Salt Path, may not have been all it seemed, the story sent shockwaves through the literary world.

But following the initial exposé, investigative reporter Chloe Hadjimatheou was inundated with new leads. Over the past few months, she has tracked down fresh sources, uncovered new inconsistencies, and followed a trail of claims that suggest the deception may have gone far deeper than anyone realised.

Over 2025, every Friday, the Sky News Daily has been profiling a figure in the news – those who are making headlines, creating conversations. During the festive period, we’re revisiting some of those standout profiles – the ones that really got us talking.

In July, the author of bestselling book The Salt Path was the main character in her own seismic plot twist. Was the story – based on Raynor Winn’s life-affirming account of how her husband’s illness and losing their money and home put them on a 630-mile coastal walk – true?

Since the initial bombshell that it wasn’t quite all that, there’s been news accusations alleging Raynor Winn took money from relatives. And the Sky Documentaries team has followed the story too, in a new film out for your festive viewing.

You can make up your own mind on the real Salt Path, for now, here’s our revisit to: What’s the truth of The Salt Path?

Is memoir a lie if it leaves things out?

In this video, I explore the recent controversy around The Salt Path by Raynor Winn – a memoir that has inspired thousands, now facing questions about its truthfulness. But beneath the headlines lies a deeper question: What do we really mean by “truth” in personal storytelling?

I look at the blurred lines between memoir, autobiography and autofiction, and consider writers like David Sedaris and Annie Ernaux who push those boundaries in different directions. From emotional honesty to narrative shaping, this isn’t just about one book, it’s about how we all tell stories, and how we choose to read them.

The contract they hoped would stay buried has finally surfaced — and it blows the Post Office scandal wide open.
In this video, I explore the Post Office scandal through two ideas: moral compass recalibration and institutional memory. Using the newly revealed contract between the Post Office and Fujitsu, I unpack how executives defended Horizon while ignoring ethics, how social and organisational pressures distort moral judgement, and why incriminating documents — and the truth — always resurface. From shredded minutes to the apparent executive’s inability to recall, this scandal shows how when those in positions of authority fail to recall if they did anything wrong, institutional memory steps in and fills the gap. If you’re following the inquiry, interested in organisational ethics, or want to understand why accountability eventually catches up, this video breaks it all down for you.

Andrew Lownie reflects on Prince Andrew’s disastrous Newsnight interview, calling it brazenly dishonest and catastrophically misjudged. He reveals the interview was effectively handed to Newsnight after years of groundwork by BBC Panorama researchers, whose role went uncredited. Lownie explains how Andrew’s denials, especially over the photo with Virginia Giuffre, taken by Jeffrey Epstein, forced him into increasingly implausible lies that collapsed his credibility.

Guest bio: Andrew Lownie is an award-winning investigative biographer, journalist, and publisher, widely regarded as one of Britain’s most relentless royal historians. He is the author of Traitor King, The Mountbattens, and his latest book Entitled, which examines Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. Sky News has uncovered a new twist in the story of Eleanor Williams, the teenager who faked a grooming scandal in her hometown of Barrow-In-Furness.

Warning: This report from our Home Editor Jason Farrell contains descriptions of violence and includes graphic images of injuries, which some viewers may find distressing.

Williams was found guilty of fabricating evidence to frame innocent men for violent sexual crimes they had not committed.

For the first time, Sky News is revealing extracts of her diary, which catalogues abuse by controlling men.

It may be a work of fiction, yet somehow within it, the girl infamous for lying – identifies a man who was undoubtedly a real abuser.

Her diary was written before he was charged with his offences.

The footage, shared exclusively with the BBC, tracks 23-year-old Eleanor Williams’ deceit as it becomes more elaborate over a three-year period.

One video shows her with self-inflicted facial wounds while acting drugged.

Williams was jailed for eight-and-a-half years after being found guilty of perverting the course of justice.

14 mrt 2023 PRESTON COMBINED COURT CENTRE

A 22-year-old woman, whose lies caused a storm of anger and protests after she falsely claimed she was the victim of an Asian grooming gang, was jailed for eight and a half years.

Eleanor Williams fabricated evidence to make it look like she was a victim of multiple men – including using a hammer to inflict injuries on herself.

Three men that Williams had falsely accused of attacking her said they had tried to take their own lives because of her accusations.

She was found guilty of eight counts of perverting the course of justice after a trial at Preston Crown Court, having already admitted a further, ninth count of the same offence.

The Recorder of Preston, Judge Robert Altham, said: “It is troubling to say the least that she shows no significant signs of remorse.”

The judge said there was no explanation for why the defendant made the allegations, which he described as “complete fiction”.

“Unless and until the defendant chooses to say why she has told these lies, we will not know,” he added.
