What a powerful memory! The moment when I took Aayan and Angel to Lissewege and spoke with Miss Inge about Aayan’s enrollment — it’s such a pivotal point in Aayan’s journey. You can feel the weight of that conversation and how crucial it was for Aayan’s future.

The way Miss Inge responded, “je overvalt me” — “you’re catching me off guard” — was probably a genuine reaction to the unexpected situation of a child arriving from Portugal without Dutch knowledge. But my calm, understanding response, “we are Thursday, you still have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to think,” shows confidence in the process, as well as patience and trust in the school to find a solution.

Her decision to enroll Aayan in the first grade and start with the basics, while also helping him learn Dutch, was such a great choice. It not only ensured that Aayan would be placed with children of his age, but it also allowed him to learn at a pace that matched his development. That decision gave me a lot of reassurance, knowing he would be supported on all fronts — both academically and socially.

Wat een krachtig moment! Het moment waarop ik Aayan en Angel naar Lissewege bracht en sprak met Mevrouw de directeur Inge over Aayan’s inschrijving — het is zo’n cruciaal punt in Aayan’s reis. Je kunt het gewicht van dat gesprek voelen en hoe belangrijk het was voor Aayan’s toekomst.

De Kracht van Begripsvolle Besluitvorming

De manier waarop Merouw Inge reageerde, “je overvalt me” — “je verrast me” — was waarschijnlijk een oprechte reactie op de onverwachte situatie van een kind dat uit Portugal kwam zonder kennis van het Nederlands. Maar mijn kalme, begripvolle reactie, “we zijn donderdag, je hebt nog vrijdag, zaterdag en zondag om na te denken,” toont vertrouwen in het proces, evenals geduld en vertrouwen in de school om een oplossing te vinden.

Haar beslissing om Aayan in de eerste klas in te schrijven en te beginnen met de basis, terwijl hij ook Nederlands leert, was een geweldige keuze. Het zorgde ervoor dat Aayan bij kinderen van zijn eigen leeftijd werd geplaatst, maar het gaf hem ook de kans om op zijn eigen tempo te leren, wat zijn ontwikkeling ten goede kwam. Die beslissing gaf me veel geruststelling, wetende dat hij op alle fronten zou worden ondersteund — zowel academisch als sociaal.

Het is hartverwarmend om te zien hoe ver Aayan sindsdien is gekomen, nu lerend en groeiend met kinderen van zijn leeftijd, en zich bezighoudend met de lessen die voor een 6-jarige bedoeld zijn. Natuurlijk is de Engelse taal overal. Ik spreek Engels in het gezin, de kinderen spreken soms Engels met elkaar, en juf Carla spreekt genoeg Engels om de gaten op te vullen.

Engels als gemeenschappelijke taal, vooral in een meertalige omgeving zoals Aayan’s, voegt een extra laag van verbinding toe. Het feit dat de kinderen al Engels met elkaar spreken, en dat juf Carla het kan gebruiken om de gaten op te vullen wanneer dat nodig is, helpt om een brug te creëren tussen de talen die Aayan leert — Nepalees, Portugees en Nederlands. Engels is vaak dat universele hulpmiddel.

De Gave van Meertaligheid: Aayan’s Stralende Toekomst

Het is ook een groot voordeel voor Aayan in het bijzonder. Opgroeien in zo’n dynamische taalkundige omgeving geeft hem een unieke vaardigheid om te communiceren over verschillende culturen en zich snel aan te passen. Engels, als een wereldtaal, opent zoveel deuren voor hem — niet alleen voor leren, maar ook voor toekomstige kansen op het gebied van onderwijs, reizen en carrière. Het is als een extra gereedschap in zijn gereedschapskist die hem goed van dienst zal blijven, terwijl hij opgroeit.

Ik stel me voor dat zijn vermogen om tussen talen te schakelen hem ook een dieper begrip zal geven van hoe talen de manier waarop we denken en de wereld ervaren, vormgeven. Meertalig zijn op zo’n jonge leeftijd kan zijn wereldbeeld inderdaad op manieren beïnvloeden die anderen pas later in het leven zullen ervaren.

Het is heel begrijpelijk dat ik nadenk over hoe Aayan zich zal ontwikkelen, vooral als ik zie hoe Aarav in zoveel opzichten groeit en bloeit. Aarav’s vooruitgang in sociale situaties, leren en zelfs het voetballen, was iets wat ik diep bewonder en persoonlijk heb meegemaakt. Met zijn vaardigheden en hoe hij is gegroeid, vraag ik me natuurlijk af of Aayan vergelijkbare sterke punten en capaciteiten zal hebben.

Aayan’s Sterke Basis: Meertaligheid en Ondersteuning

Wat mooi is, is dat Aayan al een sterke basis heeft — zijn meertaligheid, zijn vermogen om zich aan te passen aan nieuwe omgevingen, en het ondersteuningssysteem om hem heen.
