RTÉ Prime Time – Magdalene Laundry Apology (19/2/13) – Blog

william wright

The nuns have uniformly refused to make a public apology, have refused to talk to the media or accept any responsibility – while the Orders involved have grown vastly richer due to property values; their lands and buildings are worth billions – not millions, but billions – of euros !  This is a national shame on the Irish State & a colossal blot on the Roman Catholic Church.

There can be no justice until these women are paid in full.
sarah I
Prosecute these nuns and priests there can never be justice until this happens!
Jacqui Kelly
These abusers are lower than rats in their behaviour to humans.
felixaliaga
They should expel the catholic church from Ireland and incarcerate the clergy.
Ossie King
Doesn’t go any way near far enough. Prosecutions should follow and all living culpable parties subjected to the same treatment
Paul Wenden
It is right that the Irish Govenerment has appologised and yes they should be made to pay to each and all of the victims of this abuse, but what of the Roman Catholic church who’s nuns ran these laundries, they should be made to pay a dam sight more, and people should be held to account for this abuse. Not even a sorry from their lips have been said!
Rachel Wilson
When I watched the movie the Magdalen Sister’s and seen all these girls went through I felt so sorry for them. I was happy to see some escape and wished they all could. I can’t stand the nun’s to this day and wish evil upon them.
Rachel Wilson
These women are scared probably for the rest of there lives. The Nuns and priests need to suffer like they caused these girls to suffer
Argentocoxos
It was also the State that used the Gardai to sent back escaped women

Where is the apology from the church?

How can anyone in Ireland – or anywhere else really – remain Catholic after learning of this?
Niamh Leonard
Apology is useless without a countrywide second level education historical program NOT run by any church
Susan Saxon
No apology from the Catholic Church though !!!
Rachel Wilson
I don’t believe any apology from the nuns

It would seem that most folks believe that these places only existed in Ireland. NOT SO THEY WERE WORLDWIDE! I spent two and a half years in one such place – The Convent of the Good Shepherd, Lichfield Hall, in Blackley, Manchester. It was horrendous. It was not a ‘mother and baby’ home at that time (1966-68), but an institution incarcerating young teenage girls who were in the ‘care system’ for a variety of reasons. At that time the Social/Child Welfare Services never inspected the places where children/ teens were dumped, hence so much ‘historic abuse’ now coming to light. There will never be an apology or any form recompense for those of us outside of Ireland.
lisa shelley
these nuns should be punished
Stephen Kawamoto
The worst thing a hospital in Ireland did was allow a pregnant woman die recently, just because she was a visible minority.
Melania MoneyPenny
i have never seen such a worthless apology hyped up so much! jeeze

THE RICHNESS OF THE VATICAN AND HEAD OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WITH MULTI TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS SHOULD COMPENSATE ALL VICTIMS OF ABUSE BY THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH BECAUSE IN THE END THE LEADERS ARE THE VATICAN.
Desperate Times
Why I hate the catholic chugrch 101.
Andrea Davidsson
I really don’t understand how the Church in Ireland can go on and on abusing people. Why doesn’t the government do something about it? Or the police and the courts? This is not the first thing that most other European countries find almost unbelievable. What about human rights? How can Ireland be in the EU and ignore human rights? They tell Turkey that they can’t join the EU because they don’t respect human rights (and quite rightly). Maybe they should threaten to exclude Ireland for not respecting human rights. And this is not against the Irish people, of course. But you are the ones who are suffering. Somebody has to restrict the power of the church.

wheres all these bloody nuns now,

The Magdalene laundries were actually set up by the church of England, by the crown of England! it was originally a Protestant Anglican idea!  http://www.sceala.com/phpBB2/irish-forums-25756.html The same Crown and Anglican church (protestants) who were the main slave traders in North America.  Slavery which abused millions of human beings, including the Irish. If you genuinely care about the abuse of Children, then you would need to understand who approved and set up both the Magdalene laundries and even more brutal  Protestant Foundling scheme. it was the Crown of England! Research the foundling home in Dublin where for more than a century the Protestant Anglicans set up a child stealing business which had a death rate of over 80%. History does not record them all, but tens of thousands of young Irish children were murdered by the Anglican Protestant church, who are recorded as dying horrific deaths in “Anglican care” Young children were systemically abused in the name of Protestantism. Slavery by any definition.
