Refreshing to hear someone talk so openly with no fear of being branded a ‘sympathiser’. Louis’s quite unique in his brilliant style and application.

Louis is a national treasure. His documentaries are brilliant.

Louis has tackled the most taboo subjects brilliantly and continues to do so. In respect of the Jimmy Saville documentary it’s easy for anyone to look in hindsight at the past and it is a shame that Louis has to defend himself. I remember my mother saying many years ago when he was on Jim’ll Fix It that she couldn’t stand the man and he gave her the creeps. I always remember her repeatedly saying that she didn’t trust him whenever he appeared on the TV and I don’t doubt this a view that was shared by many across the country well before his death.

I always remember the story of one young girl who was invited to see Saville in his caravan in the grounds of a hospital or children’s home , of course he tried it on with her, she protested and complained to the ‘ management’ , and was immediately put into isolation for three days until she agreed not to complain.

Always loved Louis. His interview style in his docs is something I’ve come to love over the years. He never shows how he truly feels and keeps a stoic unbiased facial expression and view, and politely interjects his opinion and such a manner that it’s fascinating to watch. He really gets into what he’s investigating and has brought some of the best journalism to us over the last couple decades.

This is so fascinating. I know the presenters were keen to hear Louis’ answers, but I wish they’d allowed him to finish sentences and not finish them for him.

The world needs more people like Louis Theroux.

I’ve watched ‘When Louis Met Jimmy’ several times through sheer morbid fascinating, and also to see if I myself could pick up on any abnormities exuded by Jimmy. But like Louis, I was perplexed by his whole persona. I am of course viewing the documentary through pre-abuse claims and the death of Saville. The guy was a master of manipulation.

I love how Louis just turns off when Brain and Lawrence just interrupt him with meaningless conversation and then carries on exactly where he was before he was rudely interrupted

I worked at pinewood in the late 80s, i was told about him back then by several different people, it was an open secret in those circles, but like everyone else took it as just hearsay or malicious rumours. Told many people over the years what I’d heard and no believed it until it all blew up.

How anyone can look at Jimmy Saville without even knowing the allegations and think that he is a normal individual without a sinister side, is just shocking. He was the most creepy looking and behaving character. Then the allegations came out. The only thing that makes no sense is how he could create such fear in people to have got him to where he got to. A talentless., creepy, man that got close to charities and individuals to manipulate humans to believe he was good.

Always fascinating listening to Louis and watching his documentaries. He’s a guy who always has something interesting to say, it’s a pity the other bloke kept on cutting him off and interrupting though ️ One of True Geordie’s skills is actually letting his guests speak before responding, which ends up ruining the interaction.

Louis, you are unique. While you often appear emotionless, I really like that about you. Some people find it “dull” ,. But as an analyst by nature I really do see where you are coming from. I genuinely love your work

Get Jonny rotten on if you can. He was in the know back then and claims people were covering it up. Would be fascinating. Not to mention his sex pistols stories

Netflix NEED to invest in Louis, so he can create an investigative journalism series on numerous topics, in different countries around the globe.

Louis is an incredibly intelligent, honest and thoughtful journalist. Certainly one of the most genuine ever to have been on our screens, I have great respect and admiration for his incredible integrity!

Louis is fantastic and I’ve followed his career since the very early days. I do however think his recent output is his poorest. His personality is at its best when he is tackling humorous, not serious, subjects in my view.

How could you not know he’s creepy ,I would never hang around someone like Seville even before the allegations , he oozes creepiness, so strange because Louis is so amazing

Doesn’t matter where Savile was he was ultimately responsible for his evil wrongdoing….but others no matter where ( the BBC or the hospitals) Who were aware of his activities, also bore a responsibility to expose his wicked crimes!

You can see the impact of Saville on Louis work. After the truth came out, gone was the goofy, curious, non-judgemental nature of interviews. It became Louis taking a position and trying to argue against wrong especially concerning celebrities. The documentaries have suffered, left a deep scar.

I grew up watching Louis Theroux documentaries he’s always been brilliant viewing!

The docs are always incredible. I remember sitting at my grans when the news came out about JS. I remember saying ‘what’s the point he’s dead.’ Only now have I realised I wasn’t saying he should rest in peace. I was actually angry because he couldn’t be punished, he couldn’t have a trail, he couldn’t be interrogated by police. Hearing a guilty verdict. That’s what’s sad. The victims know he’s dead but he should have had a hard time with police etc.

I would watch any documentary that Louis does. He’s brilliant & they way he conducts them are always done so well. I’ve enjoyed documentaries I would have no interest in apart from Louis was doing it. I remember watching the Savile documentary think he was very manipulative & trying to win Louis over. I just got that bad gut feeling watching him & couldn’t find anything nice about him by the end of it. I had specifically thought god he’s pulled the wool over Louis eyes.

The real crime is that the truth didn’t come out until he died

It was an interesting piece with jimmy and Louis because Louis used the same kind of interview tactics where he makes himself appear vulnerable to get the subject to say or do certain things . Jimmy used the same kind of tactics on Louis .

I feel for Louis Theroux’s guilt. He’s a top investigative journalist with misgivings and missed it. All of us groomed people feel the same. These people are so good at manipulation. You have to let the guilt go. The perp is at fault. Not the groomed person.

Although the BBC were complicit…he is right about the NHS.

I remember in the 1970s and 80s he was lionised by the British media always appearing on news items being interviewed in his tracksuit while doing charity runs etc As a kid I found him creepy but did watch his Jim’ll Fix It TV program.

He was supplying children to people. His nephew told a few stories about things he had seen. The thing is is that this sort of thing has been going on a very long time. We can even go back to the Roman times. But this ring goes far and wide and LOTS of politicians and people in power partake in. Then there are the others on the same level that know about it and turn a blind eye to it. The main reason it continues to this day, virtually unchecked.

I think this is interesting- I always wondered what his take was. He describes it very plausibly, I get how he trod carefully and came to like him. Right up to the point he was asked about trafficking. Saville said that he had a lot of cars to make a quick escape, and he said that he had dirt on people. I don’t think Louis is ready to face the trafficking reality of the story yet. Or he’s in that circle.

I’m a child of the same era & like many others wrote in to “Jim’ll Fix It”. In hindsight, thank god I didn’t end up on the program. It’s thanks to people like Lois that we know what we know now. Thanks

I often wondered what Saville’s mother would have thought of him, or to what degree she knew about how disturbed he was to say the least.

I remember seeing this on late night TV here in Australia. I had no idea who either one was but I did keep watching Louis T because I loved his interviews. Years later I found out just who Jimmy Saville was. Yuck…

Laurance, if it is an NHS failure then this does not mean this is a challenge to your political beliefs or the NHS as it stands now, neither should you be worried about some stupid paper that is known for bull. It is the victims and the people who let this happen that should be focused on, and if you don’t like where that goes just because it could be down to NHS staff and management allowing it then you need to take the partisan blinders off pal.

Savile may have been a loner but you can bet your bottom dollar that there were those in power who had info on him and the crimes he committed long before he died.

Louis documentaries are so good. Saville was a suspect in the Ripper murders, he was questioned apparently.

Sorry I have to ask why Louie can’t believe Saville supplied kids to others. All he had to do was go in a car, or get someone else to drive them to whoever wanted them. He may have been hanging around with the barber and shop keeper at the end of his life but the early/mid days he was very much hanging in powerful circles. Feel Louie is trying not to end his own career by dismissing the other culprits

The BBC actively covered up his crimes for decades. The deserve the rap…..and more besides.

I was being discharged from Stoke Mandeville spinal ward in 2001 the day Saville was visiting I was exited with the news of his arrival as a kid growing up with Jim’l fix it but that quickly became sour as the atmosphere of the nurses was a sense of worry! His words to me on arrival was.. anyone better looking than me has 10 minutes to leave! A bit weird for what I thought was a national treasure! Years later this all came out and I can’t help but think I should of spoke up at the time but being only 20 I didn’t think anyone would listen!

When I saw the docco in 2000 I remembered thinking after he showed LT the ‘The naughty chair’ where he made examples of young people…the cops should have been called…he was almost confessing what he was.

I disagree with Louis tbh, savile had his hands in every pie possible! He was 100% delivering children to high end people which showed in that documentary of a young man being drafted through a house in London and seeing jimmy savile in the flesh.

I knew the horrible details before the Saville interview and I sadly felt Louis knew and ignored the elephant in the room.

Half truths, half the story with this interview! Louis knows a lot more than he’s letting on. I recall Saville telling him in documentary that “he is feared in every girls school in Britain” no mention of this

Why Louis can’t admit that the entire series was really a piss take of has-been or forgotten celebrities and it was made purely to exploit their quirkiness or highlight their sadness on their way down the celebrity tier list. The situation simply went down an unexpected path that hindsight suggests was not only hinted at but was standing out in plain sight. When you play with fire, sometimes you get burned and realistically Louis was lucky to not have sacrificed his career over this incident, something that definitely changed his documentaries at their core, from being comedic “hey look at these weirdos” to actually truth seeking and genuine. His penance for this mistake is having to talk about this horrible monster for the rest of ever and the fact that he can with obvious attention to detail suggest that it really did strike a nerve and recalibrate him as a journalist/presenter/film maker.

Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols has a radio show called Jonesys Jukebox. In 2007 or 2008 he had Oasis on his show and he said that he heard Jimmy Saville was into Necrophilia and ‘doing dead people’ but because he’s connected it would never come out. That’s after his and John Lydons BBC interview in 1977 where they claimed Saville was involved in ‘all types of seedy things’

Louis is a very sharp fellow. I think he knew something was off about Jimmy and was chummy with him on his documentary to try and trip him up but he didn’t. Not sure about the nature of Jimmy’s connections with royals and VIPs. It seems odd they would be so familiar with someone like him and allow him access to the palace.

I remember this ..good interview …just made me feel sick as a kid. Jimmy will fix it …Remember ..My parents said said ..you do not like him do you! no ..I did not. ..was really young …feeling …I had to leave room ..true …Kept his mothers clothes etc …felt sick again …just creepy…no way …

It’s hard to process that someone can be likeable and horrible at the same time. Savile was very intelligent. Hiding in plain side.

The way Louis Theroux speaks about Saville and all the “positives” is unnerving, regardless of whether he came across as a “friendly” figure or not, there was a monster hiding behind that facade. It doesn’t make him any less of an abomination.

In my opinion the line of questioning from these two shows the gulf in class between them and journalists like Louis theroux. I hope they understand that, there is far too much self congratulation on YouTube.

Louis is spot on….yes the BBC were despicable regarding saville .but the hospitals and prisons who let him have rooms and access to patients and inmates were even worse .surely they knew what he was up to regardless of how much money he raised he should have been jailed..

I have such a huge amount of respect for Louis in terms of how he is so diplomatic in acknowledging Savilles crimes but you can still get that sense of respect that Louis stands by for someone he felt friendship towards. It’s such a fascinating discussion and one I’m sure we’ll never tire of given that justice can not be served.

I love Louis ! I am just angry in my country we do not get the channels or streaming sites with his doccies so one has to really search places to find them .

Used to regularly see Savile hanging about outside Dunnies Cafe in Otley after school. We’d always give him the full meow-meow-meow Charlie says treatment even then (early 80’s).

All those complicit in covering up Savile’s hideous crimes should be brought to justice too. Complicit people just allow crimes to continue. Probably still goes on today with high profiled people, not speaking up against powerful people.

I think Jimmys appearance on “Through The KeyHole” is one of his most disturbing with both his creepy flat and his appearance in the studio… It’s on YouTube if you look around.

Didnt notice it the first time i watched but judging from this and other interviews Theroux seems to be towing a pro-BBC line and minimising any blame that lies within that institution, as well as casting doubt on the idea of other individuals being involved with or connected to Saville’s abuse with seemingly solid but actually rather flimsy arguments which are speculative at best Remember this guy is a high-level BBC journalist which means he has both extensive training in and understanding of media, communication, messaging etc. and a vested interest in defending the BBC from scrutiny and criticism

My uncle worked as a dispach rider for the bbc at that time and got me and my brothers and sisters tickets to top of the pops. His car wouldnt start fortunately!

Yeah completely understandable, and makes sense. He had high profile aquaintances,at the same time maintained some connection to working class people as well. That is the formula he used in a nut shell. He used his fame and connections to bugger the children of the voiceless commoners. He had to maintain some connection to the commoners to attain access to the children he was interested in. Makes sense. Because it was the children of ordinary people he abused,not the children of other famous connected people.

I saw this doco when it came out and I was struck by what a creepy looking and acting thing he was (when he was younger as well) and marvelled that he had been a much loved entertainer. Oh and BTW the NHS sux.

When a person is asked an uncomfortable question and they immediately fold their arms , it’s a defensive response physically that arouses suspicion to the validity of the answer given.

so crazy, im canadian and growing up in the 80s i heard the exact same rumours about rod stewart, richard gere. i had no idea who saville was because his programs weren’t shown in canada.

his own nephew stated he was part of a child trafficking ring. This was a good interview and I really like Louis’s work, but I think he’s still a little spellbound by Savile.

don’t know why Louie is lying, jimmy was a procurer of kids for the royals and politicians! also when i watched the documentary years ago there was a scene where in jimmies house there was a cupboard Louie opened and it was floor to ceiling filled with little girls dolls! when i found and watched the documentary again a few years ago that doll scene had been completely removed from the documentary..why? still trying to cover up for him and those VIPs he mingled with.

There are few women who watched your documentary and didn’t feel sick to the stomach.. because the depth of the depravity was SO OBVIOUS! You either knew more or you have incredibly poor judgment.

Louis Theroux is a brilliant broadcaster & a very clever manipulator himself & how he tries to extract peoples inner thoughts which he does quite successfully. He said himself there that producers & I believe the top brass must of known at the bbc all the time about Savile’s antics & it must have been a cover up & also him walking corridors of the Leeds General Infirmary were predominately done at night when there was not a lot of staff around & he knew that so he could get away with it easily. To hold the LGI responsible for that would be unfair to say the least. I believe Savile was a controlling fabricating psychopath who used that personality to fool everybody else & he did that with ease but the signs were there & many at the bbc chose not to question it.

Why tell Louis to be quiet in order to protect the BBC and hospitals just because you don’t like the Daily Mail? That’s exactly the attitude that made sure Saville got away with it.

Of course he’s being defensive, he’s taking the rap for wide scale failings in public institutions, NHS, BBC, Police, etc The only guy to publicly ask him the question and bring it to the public’s attention

I think people often think of terms like MO or gaslighting as if it’s a conscious thing. His way of ingratiating himself was probably not a deliberate attempt to empower himself or to hide his crimes. It was probably the way he effectively climbed the social ladder, a learned, subconscious characteristic. Don’t think that everyone who ingratiates themselves or gaslights is bad. they are very common behaviours that people learn to use over a long time. He was a fuckin creep tho

Smells of cover-up to me, Yewtree was an clean up operation, I wouldn’t trust Mr Theroux nor anyone else with this matter. The secret service were well aware and I would guess media and secret service are aligned at the highest level.

Thank you for speaking out Louis. You have put my mind at rest over this somewhat. I will read the report you suggest and I agree that the NHS have huge questions to answer.

Interesting interview. I don’t think Louis should feel like he shoulders any of the blame for not probing further into Saville. Louis did more to highlight issues surrounding Saville than anyone else that I can recall & at a time when nobody was talking about it. Its easier being critical with the benefit of hindsight. People who worked for the BBC were aware & refused to speak out. Go find the interview with Bill Oddie where he admits as much & while your at it check out the reaction of Esther Rantzen. Saville wasn’t a one off like the mainstream media like to portray him. He was protected by the British Establishment. Saville was incredibly well connected & untouchable. Why would they wait for him to die before allowing the story to break? Consider the sheer number of victims & why Police investigations were allowed to go no further… Saville was just the tip of the iceberg..

You have to admit, Jimmy Savile along with being a monster was pretty brilliant. He lived a life of shady practices all right under the microscope of celebrity, and was never really called out in his lifetime. That isn’t necessarily easy to pull off.

I love Louis but come on now, you don’t become a “confidante” of Prince Charles if that is not the company you keep. To become a confidante of anyone you have to spend a lot of time with them and gain their confidence, hence the term.

Mark Thompson, the guy who covered for Saville during his time in the BBC, is now the head Editor of the New York Times….

Savile probably took part in human sacrifice as well so a lot of victims never survived therefore we never knew more about the top of the pops stuff.

Dudes, stop trying to finish your interview subject’s sentences, and talking over them. Listen for a second, absorb what’s said, and then follow up on that.
