Andrew has previously denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. He has not responded to the BBC’s requests for comment on the specific allegations in relation to the release of millions of Epstein files.

Sophie Raworth presents full coverage of the day’s events on BBC News at Ten, with reporting by Lucy Manning, Jonny Dymond, Daniel Sandford, Helena Wilkinson, Noor Nanji, James Landale and Sarah Smith.

It’s a royal earthquake. For the first time since the 1647 arrest of King Charles I, a senior British royal has been arrested. Today police took Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Prince Andrew, into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office. A royal source reported that Buckingham Palace received no prior warning. The arrest comes amid an investigation into claims that Andrew shared sensitive information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as the U.K. Trade Envoy. There also have been allegations that a woman was trafficked into the U.K. by Epstein for sexual encounters with the former Prince, although police have not charged Andrew with any sexual offenses. Andrew has previously denied all accusations against him and insists that he never witnessed or suspected any of the criminal activity of which Epstein was accused. Andrew’s brother, the current King Charles, expressed his “wholehearted support” for the investigations, saying that “the law must take its course,” while Prime Minister Keir Starmer said no one is above the law. Andrew’s fall from grace began in 2019, when journalist Emily Maitlis sat down with him inside Buckingham Palace for a notorious, hour-long interview about his relationship with Epstein. It was the first time Andrew had spoken publicly about the allegations. He said then he had “no indication” Epstein was doing anything wrong. Emily Maitlis joins Christiane in London to discuss this latest development.

As U.K. Arrests Ex-Prince Andrew, Will U.S. Authorities Hold Anyone Accountable over Epstein Ties?

20 feb 2026 Latest Shows

British police released former Prince Andrew on Thursday after 11 hours in custody, with his shocking arrest earlier in the day making him the first senior British royal to be arrested in nearly 400 years. Police are probing his connections to the deceased sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein and whether he shared classified government information with him while serving as a U.K. trade representative from 2001 to 2011. King Charles’ brother, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor after being stripped of his royal title, is the most high-profile figure in the U.K. to be implicated in a widening scandal over ties to Epstein, who died in a New York jail in 2019 awaiting trial on sex trafficking. Authorities did not reference sexual abuse allegations against Mountbatten-Windsor or Epstein’s sex trafficking case; Mountbatten-Windsor settled a lawsuit with Epstein survivor Virginia Roberts Giuffre in 2022 and has denied all wrongdoing.

Investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr says this week’s arrest feels like a “rupture” in British society because the royals are seen as “sacrosanct” and rarely subjected to such treatment. “And in America, what are we seeing? We’re seeing this sort of culture of complete impunity, where it appears the law is not equal, where there are people who are above it.”

Epstein Files: Andrew arrested and missing data – this is still the beginning

The Epstein files have already led to massive fallout around the world since their release – not least the arrest of the former prince, Andrew, the resignations of politicians and high-profile public figures and growing pressure on Donald Trump’s administration, including his Attorney General Pam Bondi.

But they’ve also revealed the massive gap between what Trump’s government claims and what is actually in the data. While Pam Bondi and the White House say the Epstein Files have been released, our forensic investigation reveals that up to 98% of the files are still missing.

We will show you the evidence that the Department of Justice and the FBI were originally dealing with terabytes of data, while the public has only been shown a tiny fraction of that.

This FourSight episode goes inside the chaos of the release process, where investigators describe the data management as a total nightmare. We show you the internal emails where officials admit they couldn’t even open many of the largest files, leaving huge portions of the evidence “completely invisible”.

While the government protects the names of high-level Epstein contacts, they have accidentally leaked the private contact information of victims. We dig into the mystery of the Epstein surveillance footage – despite proof of cameras in rooms across Epstein’s Manhattan and Palm Beach properties, to date we’ve seen just a single spycam video.

And we break down how we found hidden media files buried in the DoJ’s release of the files and explain why the fight for the remaining terabytes to be released represents another battle for accountability.

As the fallout from these files leads to the arrest of a former British Royal and the resignation of top executives at Barclays and Goldman Sachs, UN experts warning that the evidence points to potential crimes against humanity, there have been zero new prosecutions in the United States.

But we are still at the beginning of the Epstein scandal and with the release of these files perhaps a step closer to true accountability for his victims.
