Behind every case is a human story — a life that can change when a system meant to protect begins to fall short.

A system can function on the outside, while a human being can suffer on the inside.
1 When does following a system become different from serving justice?
“Can following the rules ever lead to something that feels unjust?”
A justice system is built to protect truth, fairness, and society. But when the system itself is placed under pressure, the consequences are not only found in documents, procedures, or decisions — they are felt in the life of a person.
Behind every case is a human being with a history, relationships, hopes, and a future that can be changed forever. When someone becomes caught inside a process they cannot control, the feeling of being unheard and powerless can become overwhelming.
Sometimes the greatest questions are not only about what the law allows, but about what justice requires. Because a system can appear to function while hidden weaknesses allow a person to become trapped inside its consequences.
This is the human side of justice: the moment when responsibility, truth, and conscience meet.

When the Owner Looks Away
The dangerous dog metaphor and the failure to accept responsibility
Lord Arbuthnot’s “dangerous dog” analogy asks a fundamental question: if an organisation causes serious harm, who is responsible when those who own it refuse to take control?
Post Office Inquiry: Lord Arbuthnot compares Government control of firm to ‘owning a dangerous dog’
10 apr 2024
Lord Arbuthnot has criticised the Labour government for avoiding responsibility for addressing the Horizon IT scandal in 2010.
The inquiry was shown a letter written by then business minister, Pat McFadden, in which Mr McFadden said the government had an “arm’s length” relationship with the Post Office.
Lord Arbuthnot said: “What this ‘arm’s length’ arrangement essentially means is that the government is refusing to take the responsibilities that go with ownership and I don’t think it’s right to do that for various reasons.
“One reason is that if you have an organisation that is as important to the community as the post office, then the people have got to be able to have proper control over it, if the people own it.
“There’s a sort of democratic deficit that is popping up here if the government is refusing to take responsibility for it.”
Lord Arbuthnot then compared the situation to the owner of a dangerous dog refusing to take responsibility for their pet.

Behind every case is a human story — a life that can change when a system meant to protect begins to fall short.
The elevator doors become a metaphor: the person is not only physically stuck; he is dependent on a system (the elevator, the helpers, the circumstances) that is temporarily unable to protect him.
