Did Prince William allegedly go silent on purpose after Earl Spencer’s explosive new book about Diana? According to reports and palace watchers, a quiet response behind the scenes may have shifted the balance in one of the royal family’s most painful feuds, and it all started with a single disputed phone call.

In this video, we look at the claims surrounding the memoir, the King’s impossible position, and the Diana ring moment that royal commentators can’t stop debating. Then we go back to the summer of 1993 and Diana’s request for a safe home, the famous Westminster Abbey eulogy, the questions about Althorp’s visitor attractions, and the reported Harry connection. We also cover the rumors of quiet legal and patronage steps, and why William has spoken out forcefully in the past, such as after the Dyson report, but stayed silent this time.

Stay until the end for the final detail that reframes the entire story. Which side do you believe? Tell us in the comments, and subscribe for more royal stories.

‘DEVASTATING!’ Diana’s friend reacts to new claims about Charles | Palace Confidential

Palace Confidential

18 sep 2026 Palace Confidential 👑

In the week that Earl Spencer’s BOMBSHELL book ‘Swan Song’ has made headlines around world (even before it’s release), Richard Kay gives an exclusive, inside scoop on the FULL CONTENTS of Charles Spencer’s ‘excoriating’ memoir.

Richard was not only a friend to Diana, but was also in contact with Earl Spencer during key events recounted in the book, including the aftermath of Diana’s death, meaning his personal insights on the allegations made are both unique and unparalleled.

In this UNMISSABLE EPISODE, Richard explores:

Whether Princes Harry and William were deployed as ‘HUMAN SHIELDS’ to protect Prince Charles during their mother’s funeral? The moment Prince Philip slapped-down Prince Charles on the morning of the funeral. What the Queen REALLY felt about Earl Spencer’s iconic eulogy. Did Prince Charles really say to Earl Spencer that he believed he was ‘lucky’ that his father died, as it meant he inherited his title aged 27? Was Diana’s eating disorder exacerbated by being forced to switch from her family GP to Palace doctors after her engagement? And which member of the Spencer family was secretly in love with Queen Elizabeth?

And perhaps most provocatively, what did Diana mean when she told her brother that Prince Charles was ‘in love with his valet’?

And, of course, how are William and Harry going to react to their uncle’s tell-all book about their mother and father?

Buckingham Palace has said it doesn’t comment on book releases as a matter of principle. And yet it has commented on a new book – from Princess Diana’s brother – in a way that has sparked off a news cycle.
Earl Spencer claims in his new book that in a heated row with Charles in the preparation for Diana’s funeral, the then Prince spat out “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough”. The Palace’s response: “His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”

Why has the Palace chosen to pick this public spat? Why are the Royal family unable to go a week at the moment without descending into some form of internecine warfare? And should this sort of family squabble even be published in the first place?

Later, the EU’s love affair with Canada has caused Donald Trump to sit up and pay attention. He’s threatening to stop trade with Europe if it feels “hostile” to America. Mark Carney says that “no one is going to dictate our culture.” So what happens now?

Earl Spencer’s Friend Defends Swan Song: ‘This Is Not Just Dredged Up To Flog Copies’

👑 Who do you believe in the extraordinary war of words between King Charles and Princess Diana’s brother?

Earl Spencer has doubled down on one of the most explosive claims in his new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.

Spencer alleges that during a heated argument over Diana’s funeral, the then Prince Charles told him: “We’ll forget her soon enough.”

Now, in an interview with the BBC, Spencer has insisted the conversation happened as he remembers it.

“Those are exactly the words he said,” Spencer told the broadcaster, adding: “I’m telling the truth.” He says he told close friends and family about the alleged remark at the time because he considered it “monstrous”.

Spencer has also accused the King of “gaslighting” him following Buckingham Palace’s response to the allegations.

The Palace previously issued an unusually direct statement saying “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory” even many years after a loss.

Spencer has also made other claims about Charles in the book, including that he sounded “giddily elated, like a lottery winner” during a telephone conversation following Diana’s death. That allegation is Spencer’s recollection and is disputed in the wider Palace response to his account.

Sources close to the King have accused Spencer of reopening painful wounds from the past, while Spencer argues he is putting the record straight about his sister.

So who do you believe?

Is Earl Spencer entitled to tell his version of events and defend his recollection?

Or should claims about private conversations almost 30 years ago be treated with caution when the accounts are disputed?

ITV News journalist Steve Scott recalls his time with Princess Diana on her trip to Angola, where she walked through a live minefield and brought the world’s attention to the lasting impact of war on civilians.

In the wake of her divorce from the then-Prince Charles, the January 1997 trip was intended to mark the beginning of a new humanitarian phase of her life but was tragically followed by her death in Paris just seven months later.

Steve Scott spent more time with Diana than any other journalist on the trip, and was struck by her warmth and openness. He reveals what Diana said her priorities were at that time in her life – and her plans for William and Harry following her divorce.

Reporting History sees journalists join News At Ten anchor Tom Bradby to revisit their remarkable reports from the defining events of the modern age and reveal the drama that occurred off camera.

Steve also tells the story of how her iconic landmine walk was captured, and what Diana made of a political row back at home over her campaign against landmines.
